Make or break me

hi everyone, im going to undertake a momentous feat really soon and let me explain it here.....

first of all, im 220 pounds and have been trying to pressure myself into getting out on my bike and doing more excercise...ive been doing about 5 miles a day for the past few weeks and just recently i've received a wonderful opportunity....im about to sell a van 200 miles away and have decided to bring my bike along and a trailer and bike all the way back.....im going to need all the support i can get from people in these forums...do you guys think i can do it or not?

in about a few hours im going to be heading out to sell my van....im basically going to ride from riverside california to santa barbara california....my goal is to do it in 3 days or less...

i've never ridden really far and this is either going to make or break me...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/ima...sporting-goods

that link is of the hybrid bike that i will be using.

im going to shoot for 6 hours a day at 10 mph...maybe even a 10 hour day if i dont get too tired...

i would like to also hear about experiences that you guys have had.....this isnt well planned out and is more of a spontaneous thing.....

i have approximately 6 hours before i begin this journey and will post my success or failure if i make it back....

thank you all, wish me a wonderful trip

You won't make it.
You will be a doner at 40-50 miles on the first day.

Go ahead and try.
Happy Miles.

You are a nice guy and so am I.
I had 1,000 miles on my legs before doing a 42 mile ride.
I had to take car ride home that day.

burningredphoen 04-18-10 02:06 PM

were you racing? or just riding comfortably?

10 Wheels 04-18-10 02:07 PM

Just riding with a slow group.

10 Wheels 04-18-10 11:17 PM

OP has sold his van.
He will ride the 200 miles in 6 to 7 days if he needs to.

gitarzan 04-18-10 11:23 PM

How many forums are you going to post this odyssey in?

SteveInJapan 04-19-10 01:34 AM

How did that go? Three days sounds a bit optimistic, but if you just kept a steady pace... Going from 5 miles a day to 60+ miles a day, three days in a row sounds rough!

Juha 04-19-10 02:26 AM

Best case scenario is, OP's still out there riding. He probably knows by now that riding 60+ miles the first day is quite possible, if one is in reasonable physical shape. Next morning, his joints, muscles and ass will be sore. Depending on how badly he wants to do it, he'll ride on, causing further physical discomfort that will take time to heal properly. He doesn't have that time, as he plans to do it in three days or less.

If he actually finishes in 3 days, odds are he'll hate cycling for the rest of his life. Best of luck in any case.

HELLLOOOO!!!!

this is the original poster.....76 miles in my first 24 hours....right now im in the middle of malibu at a pavillions using the internet...this 76 miles, now 109 from where im at has been a monumental accomplishment...this is my first ever long ride with about 50 pounds of gear and i was quite surprised that i made it to santa monica beach about 24 hours after i departed from riverside.....the main problem im having right now is tackling the hills along this coast and also some impending rain that could start any moment...i may have to wait the rain out thus extending my deadline to 4 days; i just hope the rain lasts for only a few hours. i am predicting that i will arrive in oxnard some time tonight if i do continue riding, however, the sky doesnt look very promising. I dont think i can really call this my first century because it wasnt done within 24 hours so i wont do that....amazingly, the most difficult part from me was the 30 mile mark when i hit Upland, Ca ...right now, it seems a bit more like a job than an actual challenge, except for when i hit a hill....im hoping to more flat ground soon and get away from these hills.......Now, for those of you who say you can't do it, the truth is you can! i've been a lazy fat couch potato for a long time and this was sort of spontaneous with barely any miles on my legs, and it doesnt seem so bad...of course, im taking breaks every 5 or so miles and loading up on tons of calories constantly....im trying to shoot for oxnard tonight....which doesnt look possible since right now i can finally see rain dropping out of the sky...wish me more luck on the rest of my adventure, im going to go to weather.com now to see how long im going to be stalled.

now that ive actually gotten out on the road, i truly believe i could have done this in 3 days; my only problem right now is that im going to have 3 days of rain.....ive been setting goals...i set a goal to get to downtown los angeles in 24 hours; however, i exceeded that and made it to about bevery hills in 24 hours.....my goal for the second 24 hours was supposed to be oxnard from santa monica beach however, ive made it to "point dume" in malibu with more than half of daylight left, and i say this because im not letting the setting sun stop me...i still continue on at night and only get about 4-6 hours of sleep.

lol you were wrong, i was actually a donner at 30 miles but then i took a long break and ate a couple thousand calories a multi vitamin a gallon of milk and then pushed on after about a 2 hour break......well maybe not a gallon of milk....more like a quart.....then i went to KFC and asked them for that new calorie loaded "double down" sandwich that has no bread.

lol just this one....i've found that if i focus more on my surroundings rather than getting somewhere, it makes the ride much more enjoyable.

10 Wheels 04-20-10 05:28 PM

Good work 76 mi in 24 hours....

burningredphoen 04-22-10 11:58 AM

I SMELL VICTORY.....im about 12 miles away now from my destination......i truly believe that i could have done this trip in 3 days except that past day and a half the wind was blowing at 31 mph with gusts at 41 mph against the direction i was going....i was barely able to do 20 miles in those conditions and wasnt able to roll down hills without pedaling.

kw 04-22-10 01:28 PM

Hi burningredphoen,

Nice job on cranking out that many miles with the small base you started with.

You could get a lot farther with the same effort by investing in a road bike. The thinner tires and aerodynamic position can be adjusted for the perfect balance of efficiency and comfort.

Second, you could have saved a whole ton of time by using proper rain clothing and fenders. That way you could keep going even in the rain.

But overall, hats off to ya!

This thread should probably belong in the Long Distance Cycling forum.

Good Ride. Your The man on a bike.

burningredphoen 04-22-10 10:03 PM

i think the pain is catching up to me now lol....im gonna take a few days off from biking anything over 6 miles a day

ftwelder 04-23-10 02:32 AM

Congrats, I used to know a bunch of guys who would ride only once a year, the Solvang century. I knew you could do it!

ahandley 04-23-10 06:05 AM

Wow man the is quite an accomplishment. Hope you continue to ride, for pleasure though, not because of a quest. But, what ever gets you motivated to get out there is good with me. Best of luck.

burningredphoen 04-23-10 04:30 PM

thanks guys

thanks for all the support...and what do you know lol my bike computer breaks after the long journey.

i think anyone can do a long ride now; before i used to think you had to be crazy to do it, but that is not the case....100 miles in 24 hours is a different story, but a long ride like this is very achieveable
