soon to be riding

Hi

I joined the forum just yesterday (spent 4 hours reading posts) and was glad to see others in the same boat as me. I am 55 years old and 310 lbs.

Obviously, one of my goals is to lose wieght, but simple transportation when RVing is also a main objective.

I have tried walking, and enjoy walking, but my knees wont alow me to walk more than about 3 miles at a time.

I came very close to buying one of the $59 Walmart bikes last week, figuring that $50 would be no great lose if it didnt work out. Heck, just spent $54 on a meal for 2 yesterday and my digestive system has already taken care of that..LOL

I have learned from reading this forum that I should visit a Bike shop and get a real bike with real service.

thanks guys.

phil

Hi Phil,
You will be so much happier with a "real" bike. The investment in your health and fitness is priceless. I also enjoy camping and touring whenever I can. I'd like to recommend that you join a club in your area for even more enjoyment with your cycling.
Good Luck and Happy Riding!

Phil,

Hello and welcome to the Forum. I do not know what your top end money maybe, but you may want to look at few Recumbents "Bents". You maybe able to find a few used ones on this Forums and others for sale.

The big advantage of a bent is the seat is wider so it's more comfortable and for a person of your size you may find it helps. I ride an EZ Sport and love it. I'm 55, 5'8", when I started riding seriously I was 210, now I'm working my way down to 200 and lower.

Just a thought.

You're one step closer to that goal of losing weight by resisting the temptation of those $59 Walmart bikes!

Take your time finding the bike you want, & test ride as many bikes as you can. A proper fit will help determine whether riding becomes a lifelong committment.

At your weight you dont need to buy a fancy bike but make sure the bike shop puts good wheels on it. That means ones with double wall, and that the spokes are properly tensioned and stress relieved. After you have been riding it a few times take it back to the shop and have trhem check the spoke tension. Good luck.
