Completely new to cycling

The name's JP- I live in middle TN about 30 minutes from Nashville. My main sport of choice is paintball; however, a friend recently picked up some fancy Trek and let me take it for a ride...and it seems like a blast to get in to. So, I found a free 80's Schwinn Traveler on Craigslist (a big thanks to the sweet old lady cleaning out her garage); and once I get new tires, tubes, and a good tuning from the local bike shop...I will be on my way. Hopefully I can get it fixed up for around $100...a pretty cheap way to get my feet wet in this hobby
Any advice on bike care, maintenance, upgrades, helmet choices, or other helpful newbie info is welcome and greatly appreciated! Thanks, and glad to be here
