Greetings all.
*stands up*
My name is Chantal and I bike to work, town,to do grocery shopping, other shopping etc.

Biking here is quite common. Most people have at least 1 bike.
I myself have 3 (although 1 isnt working :( ) and a unicycle.

Am I the only Dutch person here or are there more?

Thats it for now. If you have any questions let me know.

Welcome Quezie. I'm still a noob here, but I say welcome anyways. :)

I'm Dutch too!, but I live in Idaho.........

quezovercoatl 09-28-04 01:04 PM

Greetings other Dutch person :)

How long have you lived in Idaho for?
And is there anything Dutch you miss?

racpat_rtw 09-28-04 03:36 PM

Your Dutch is still good :)
Stroopwafels:) Everybody likes stroopwafels. It's a bit strange that you can't get them in the US. Do you know people in the Netherlands who can send them to you?

Infodiva 09-28-04 08:56 PM

My friend Remmelt introduced me to stroopwafels when I visited him in Holland - OH MY, I was addicted. There is a Dutch bakery that sells online, at http://www.caramelcookiewaffles.com. They're located in Billings, Montana. You place your order online, and they ship out freshly baked stroopwafels!! Highly recommended.

Of course, the best place to buy them is at the weekly market in a Dutch town, I think! Ummm - made right in front of you and handed to you still warm. Ok, now I'm drooling.

*Gives Infodiva a drool bucket*
There.... now thats not a problem anymore ;)

And you're right, the fresh ones are the best, but you can heat up your stroopwafel by placing it on top of cup of coffee (or hot chocolate or other hot beverages). The steam from the drink will then heat up the cookies.
Its not the same as the fresh ones, but still nice :)

racpat_rtw 09-29-04 07:38 AM

Yep, thats how I remember them, . In my previous job I traveled to Billings a couple of times, never missed the Dutch Brothers bakery for some stroopwafels.
I do get family visiting regulary, they haul over suitcases full of Dutch goodies for me. If I get real desperate there is a Dutch import mailorder store in Oregon.
Belgium beer is getting easier to get too, there is now even a new restaurant in Boise where they serve Chimay on tap! I have not yet been able to find my favourite beer here though: Hoegaarden white.

quezovercoatl 09-29-04 11:53 AM

Its good to hear you have family that keeps you supplied with Dutch food :)
I'm not really a beer drinker myself, but I did find a site that sells Hoegaarden Wit online.
Maybe you can order some from them.

How's the cycling in Idaho?
Are there bikepaths like in the Netherlands?

racpat_rtw 09-29-04 12:54 PM

Thanks for the link, it is nice to know that Hoegaarden is available.
Biking in Idaho can be great. There is a lot of mountain biking in the foothills behind Boise (many miles of trails), en several racing clubs do their weekend rides. I am more into long distance touring, preferably self contained and camping. Not much is organized for that though. There are some awesome rides possible in Idaho, this summer we attempted to do the Magruder Corridor in Northern Idaho, a distance of 112 miles between two small towns, all through wilderness areas with most of it dirt. We had to turn back because of bad weather and snow on the highest passes. But the possibility of doing trips like that makes it great to live in Idaho.
They don't have very good bikepaths here though, the only one is a very nice trail along the river, but not very usefull for commuting or getting from A to B on a bike. Nederland is the best place for that! What kind of biking do you do? I got to this site because of research I'm doing for another 'big" trip, possibly through SE Asia, China and Tibet.

quezovercoatl 09-29-04 02:28 PM

It sounds like a lot of fun to do.
Are you planning on ride the Magruder Corridor again?

As you know in the Netherlands there is not much wilderness to ride in.
Most of the riding I do is from home to work and grocery shopping.
so mostly practical things. Although I do also like to go cycling just for fun.

There are a lot of 'bike tours' you can do here
and some of them have their own signs next to the road.

How's the research for your trip going? I can't help you much with it as I've never been to any of those countries before. But Im sure someone on this forum can help you.
