hi Socal.
I don't profess to be an expert on bike selection. I bought my current bike, a ten speed road bike some 36 yrs. ago, when I was a relatively young buck. I am considering a new bike as the bent over position is being increasingly uncomfortable and had ridden a hybrid while on vacation and liked it a lot. The decision of new vs fixer upper depends a good bit on how mechanically inclined you are. I do all my own work thanks in part to an engineering degree a long time ago. Good Luck Bill

Welcome
Where in Southern California are you? I grew up in Irvine and just moved away not too long ago. I've ridden both road and ss/fg for quite some time. Roads and paved trails are so plentiful down there you can't really go wrong with either of them
