Frugality: Are You Stretching Old Gear through another Winter?
In spite of friendly calls from account reps for Discovery Cards encouraging me to use their card more often, so far this season I've resisted the temptation to patronize Peter White and order one of those fancy German head lights I've wanted for 3 years now. Sure wish the battery case on this Light in Motion 10watt halogen could be retrofitted with a fresh set of rechargeable cells. That might help me keep the urge in check. I'm afraid the bulb will outlast the battery unit.
I've also resisted the similarly budget breaking price of a pair of Lake Winter shoes. I just pulled a set of spare boot liners over my mtb shoes this afternoon. The neoprene overbooties are large enough to pull over all of that. I end up looking a bit like Herman Munster, but they aren't as bulky nor as heavy as the Pack Boots which make me look like Mickey Mouse. Just need to cut some scrap foam for soles to help keep the liners dry, and a couple of pieces to fill the spaces over the shoes where they open up. They will provide no traction, so I'll be extra careful not overcommit to cross traffic.
I must confess that I did break down and pick up a Smartwool shortsleeve jersey for myself and one for my wife's birthday at our local Scheels last week. I had a couple of gift cards and they were 50% off. I already had a closet full of my dad's old Pendleton shirts, but I haven't had the heart to wear them on the commute. There are a few with patches that would be reasonable candidates. Besides, they don't carry the favored light or the Lakes.
How about you folks? Have any triumphs of frugality to share? I need some kindred spirits to help keep Pear Budget happy.

We don't have much of a winter on The Texas Gulf Coast.
I have everything I need to ride.
