Howdy and welcome to the forums.
For riding around campus, you want a cheap crappo bike that won't get stolen, or won't set you back much if it does.
For longer faster riding, you want a decent road bike or touring bike.
Don't forget to budget for cycling clothes, possible new seat if you don't like the stock one, good pump, repair gear to carry along, etc.
