Greetings from sunny Encinitas, CA!

Hello All,

I've posted a bit over the last few weeks in the road forum, but thought I'd take a minute and introduce myself on here.

I live in Encinitas, CA, which is a suburb of San Diego. Very close to the ocean (7-10 minutes by bike, 5 by car) and a total cycling paradise. I'm 29, male, teach social studies to 7th graders at an awesome private school, and am working on my master's in education.

I've been commuting on a cheap and cheerful hybrid/utility bicycle for a good while, and I just picked up my first road bike this past Friday afternoon. I'm excited about having a new hobby that's really positive, healthy, and fun. Some friends and I are heading to Palm Springs in a few weeks to do to the Tour de Palm Springs (56-mile course) and I am assembling a calendar of event rides to take me through August. So far, it's looking like the Colnago Gran Fondo (San Diego) in April, Ensenada-Rosarito in May, and Bike the Bay in August. I'd love recommendations on other great southern-California rides. I'd like to attempt a century sooner rather than later. I've tried and loved many sports and think cycling will offer a great combination of challenge, room to grow, social opportunities, and health benefits. I've been lifting weights seriously for years so I have a base of fitness, but it's been a few years since I've seriously worked at an endurance sport. In high school I was on the crew team and also swam master's after college, so I'm no stranger to competition and hard training.

I'm very much interested in riding with a good, fun group. I'm totally open to riding with formal or informal groups and really just want to get some miles in with experienced cyclists. I know enough about what it takes to get good at something that I know I need to learn from people better than me, so if anyone here is interested in taking an athletic newbie under their wing I'd be stoked about that. I don't have plans to race right now but know I want to get strong and fast!

Thanks. Have you ridden with them? The guys at the LBS warned me away-- they said there's regularly a lot of carnage on that ride! They recommended finding a smaller group until I can hang with the Swami's B group and then riding with them, but it might be a while before that happens!

Awesome. I'll have to come join you guys one of these weekends! Seems kinda funny to drive south to then ride north (you guys come through Solana Beach, right? I see a bunch of SDBC folks at Java Depot on Saturdays), but it'll be fun.
