    Bright Side of a DUI?

Hello to any that drop by.

It's time for me to take up cycling.

As indicated in the title, I recently got a DUI, and am in a very low place right now. Besides the shame and regret of what not only what I did, but what could have happened if I had hurt somebody, I'm now faced with the aftermath of my stupidity: transportation.

And I am determined to glean some sort of self-betterment out of this mess. So, I've become fixated on bicycling as some form of salvation! (I was looking into it before the DUI, but now I've really got a drive to get into this.)

Glad to have found the site, and look forward to getting to know some of you,

    Greg

    Hello Greg, and welcome!

Don't beat yourself up too much over the DUI, you aren't the first and you won't be the last. I've been there, and so have many others. Learn the lesson, don't do it again, and treasure the perspective, even if you had to obtain it the hard way. What's done is done.

Your choice to take up cycling is a good one. Cycling is a great buzz, all by itself, so it can be a great replacement for other, more distructive highs.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't use cycling as your primary mode of transpo, lots of people do it.

Maybe the DUI is a blessing in disguise. Welcome to the bike.

Welcome to Bike Forums, and congrats on not hurting anyone and making the decision to get something positive out of the ordeal.

Howdy and welcome to the forums.

The classic stereotype of the DUI bicyclist is the guy that rides a Walmart bike at 8 mph (minimum investment, minimum effort, minimum benefit). But if you go at it with a positive attitude, there's a bunch of fun and a bunch of fitness to be had. Bicycling's been really good for me, I hope it is for you as well.

    Hi Greg -

FWIW, there's a long list of folks that have found yourself in that same spot. The difference is that you're trying to move forward and not do a repeat performance, so hat's off to you for that!

As for transport, you've already figured out the bicycle has proven to be quite the handy device for that very purpose (and if you haven't, you could wander over to Rivendell and I'm sure you'd get a good schooling from Grant Peterson). Also, as you're in Walnut Creek, BART should be of some assistance, I'd reckon.

It's also nice that you're starting this while the Bay Area is having Spring in January...

Good luck! Also, remember that there's such a thing as BUI, and I'm sure WCPD is up on those laws, too, so be careful.
There's nothing for you to see here...just move along, now...

Greg, Best of luck to you, in this way of going places. Drinking is something I have to watch out for myself.

If you learn from the dui, then that benefits you and everybody on the roads
Sounds like you have, want to make a change, and will come out on the positive side of a negative situation.
    Good luck, and happy riding!!
