Love Bicycle Commuting and Want to Build My Own

Greetings, everybody.

I moved to the Bay Area and decided that a trafficky 101 was no fun at all, and started biking regularly for my commute. I got a Trek Soho S, which I love, but am now considering refurbishing an older, geared bike for speedier commutes, and, probably, just riding for the fun of it.

You guys seem to have threads on everything, and I'll need it since I know NOTHING about building bikes yet.

Thanks!

Cheers and welcome to Bike Forums!

Bicycle Mechanics forum should be of interest to you, maybe also Classic and Vintage, depending on how much older bike we're talking about. Probably the most referred to external how-to resources are Park Tool and sheldonbrown.com. There are others too.

Welcome! Be sure to check out the Commuting Forum--lot's of good ideas to be found there.

Do you work in San Francisco? If so, that's quite a long commute from Foster City. My hat's off to you.

Greetings, to you. Working on bikes is sometimes the best part of all this, mode. I started out commuting, then had to have a back-up bike, due to bike theft, (learn to lock-up well) Started doing my own wrenching, when LBS, was less than fair with me. Building a 29" for myself this winter. Have friends in Redwood City. Byehttp://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/thumb.gif

I work in Menlo Park, so not quite as far, but still sizable.

Thanks to everyone for the forum/supplement direction. I'm inching closer to ditching the car and getting a vicious bike.
