    Hello from Cape Cod...

I'm on the Cape side of the canal in Bourne. I'm a newbie and have a Jamis Coda Sport. My main reason for starting to bike is for excersie/weight loss. I'm hoping to find some folks in my area to ride with...there is so much to learn. I signed up for a 62 mile charity ride taking place in July...so I need to get moving. I started my new "lifestyle" in December and have gone from 226 lbs to 197lbs. The beauty is I haven't even started cycling yet. My hope is to get to the mid 160's.

Anyhoo, I also work in the HVAC field. If you have any questions about your heat or a/c, give me a shout.

    Brian

Thank you. I started a food diary to track everything that went in. I also cut out the booze, which I was drinking way to much of. With the booze came the night munchies, and I really packed on the pounds. So, now I know "how" to eat.

Welcome to BF. I did a charity ride there Sept last year, from the canal and it finished about 5 miles before P.Town....I was surprised by the hills. Learn YOUR pace, and don't fall into the trap of riding too fast for the first 20 miles, and hate the last 40 miles.

I'm reading a book called The End of Overeating....which is about the science of resturants and companies producing food that is engineered to make you want to, to need to eat much more than you should. In essence they produce "crack food" and dining "experiences" to create food addicts....scary book by a legitmate Medical Doctor...

    Merlin55,

I'm gonna pick that up. I did a thesis in college about the way food is laid out in supermarkets. Millions upon millions are spent in psy research to know the trends of consumers. It's pretty scary how people can become "programed" to buy and eat a certain way. Even after doing the paper it never dawned on me that I was sucked into it. I'm happy to say I have a clear mind now. If I can just get the Mrs to get it....

Hey man... I live just on the other side of the Cape, about maybe a half hour from Bourne, in Plympton. I also do HVAC work, and went to Bay State school of Tech. If you need a riding buddy, I can help you out. I need someone to go with me this summer, as I want to do the Cape Cod rail trail, up and back (in a day/hours). I have also joined a couple of biking/hiking/whatever groups in the area. Problem is many of them go a little slow for me.

I'm up for hitting the rail trail. Just be advised that I'm a newbie and don't have solid legs under me just yet. I can ride a bike no problem, but speed and distance at this point is advanced. I'm starting a spinning class soon to get some cardio and hope to be riding outside as soon as weather allows. I'll be riding the canal often (8 miles each way) so that may be a good starting point to ride together. You may decide that I will hold you back to much, or I may surprise myself.

Once you start riding some speed will come easy. For myself I found that doing 16 mph was something I couldn't do, until I had to keep up with someone else. So 16 MPH became easy, but that was way back over the summer early fall. I haven't been on my bike since Nov. and am itching to get my butt back on it. I know my first few rides will be kind of slow, compared to what I was up to at the end of the summer.

I am building an e-motion for myself this weekend, so I can get my butt back in the saddle. I need to do it for a few hours a day, and I can watch the TV while riding. I just need to figure out how to do the resistance on it. Look up e-motion and you might like it.
