    Disabled Vet - needs advice

Hi, I am a disabled vet and the VA recently cleared me to begin riding. I am on a limited income and purchased a used bike. Rode that for a few months and it was stolen. My wife and I finally figured our budget out and I placed a bike on layaway. Well friday after work, my wife found out she is going to be laid off. I need a new bike but cannot afford it. Any suggestions on grants or anything along those lines to finance a bike for health reasons? Cycling is pretty much the only physical activity I can do, other than walking without aggravating injuries. And I need the stress relief. (I have PTSD and sometimes have it rough and need this). Any help would be appreciated. I am not asking for handouts, but rather assistance in finding some sort of grant to purchase a bike. I dont need top of the line either, but would like something reliable.

In the meantime, I am using the lifecycle at work (i work part time) and walking on a treadmill at home or in the neighborhood.

Talk with your LBS, the VA and your local VFW. They will probably be able to help you or guide you to some local help. Try Google too. There are programs out there, it's finding them that's the hard part. Most are local, and not knowing where you are makes things kind of tough.

QBP, Retro Jerseys and Allegro Bicycles in Walla Walla, WA have done some work in this area, but the article I saw was almost a year old, and I can't find any more info on it. It wouldn't hurt to contact any of these compnaies. There are others that will give you a bike in exchange for you giving up your car, but you might not be interested in that. In any case, there are programs out there, you'll just have to do some leg-work to find them.

    Hang in there. It'll happen.

Hey dude, post it up on http://www.freecycle.org/ and I'm almost certain someone will be able to help you out. It won't be new, but it will be something to help you 'medically'.

I am not aware of any "grant" programs that exist. Loans, however, do.

I too am a Disabled Vet. Where Are you located ? I have found several bikes on Craigslist. As a mater of fact i just picked one up (free) this morning. I would also look at Good Will, Salvation army, Pawn Shops & second hand stores. Try your local VFW or American legion hall they might be able to help. If you are near a military base like Ft. Lewis. Contact the MWR and ask them if there is a 'Santa's Castle' on post. I've been stationed at Ft.Lewis,Ft.Wainwright and Ft.Hood and they all had a 'Santa's Castle' . Santa's Castle takes bikes from donations and they fix them up and give them away to the soldiers Dependants at Christmas time. They also sell bikes to raise funds. I hope that helps ya.

I'm in Phoenix AZ. I checked out craigslist, not much there for me. I am specifically looking for a road bike for exersize and to ride with my brother, who is training for triathlons.... I am hoping the situation with my wife and her job gets resolved quickly. I havent cancelled my layaway yet, hoping for the best. I also am trying to get some part time work that might cover the few bills that might get missed, and if lucky keep the layaway alive and let me pay it off over a longer period. I just received an old moutain bike today for $40 bucks that will get me some ride time. So the situation is not urgent.

Thanks for the link, I will definately check that out. As far as Grants go, I had never heard of any either, but I stopped at a small bike shop I happend upon about 2 weeks ago that sells new and some used bikes, and the owner told me about a Vet that got a grant from the VA (I think he meant the VFW) for a recumbant bike. So I thought I would ask around and see if anyone knew about anything like that I could pursue. As far as loans go, I am overextended, still trying to recover from a bad divorce from a evil woman who had credit in my name I knew nothing about until she filed for divorce....
