Hello Bike-Forums!!
Hello Bike-Forums!
I am a 23yr old Student from Nottingham, and am about to embark on a Cycling trip across Europe, in aid of a) achieving my personal ambitions, and b) to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support UK. The charity has played a pivotal part in the recovery and well-being of many of my loved ones recently so in return I am hoping to raise money for them...
The reason I am posting on this thread, is primarily to seek advice from seasoned bikers about how to go about succeeding in my ambitions! I am relatively healthy and have been training for well over a year on both running and cycling, so in terms of physical condition, I would hope I was fit enough to attempt the journey....
However, when it come to the 'everything' else...This is where I could do with guidance, assistance and support!
A very close friend recommended this forum due to its casual, friendly and intuitive nature, so I am not only hopeful of your support, but am literally begging for all the help I can get...
I currently only a few things to my name... A bike, and a potential route.
My bike is a Claud Butler Hybrid Bike that was kindly handed to me by a friend for the journey, it has front suspension and road tyres. It is in decent condition, but i'm not sure if this is the right bike for the journey as well?
I also wish to cycle from Germany to Porto, Portugal. Simply because as far as I can see it's quite unorthodox, and the terrains the routes potentially cover are quite exciting and scenic. Regarding the route I wish to travel through the most scenic, picturesque routes available, Alps, Pyrenees, lakes, villages, passes, basically anywhere that is essentially 'post-card-esque'...
Now this is where I begin to struggle in all honesty, I have researched for hours on end regarding routes, equipment, tours, accommodations, safety, terrain, fitness, directions, altitudes, hazards, racks, rails, seats, weather etc etc...
From reading this the majority of people would think that this guy is crazy, he is an amateur biker, inexperienced and delusional, well, in reality, yes! I am. But this is my dream and I am determined to achieve it and see it out till the end. I have time on my side and hopefully with the support of this online community, my dreams will come true!
I need advice please, thoughts on routes, places to stay, recommendations, advice on safety, basically
everything from A-Z... equipment to take, equipment to donate, thoughts about camping? food supplements and nutrition? types of hazards I'm likely to experience, advice from people who have done similar journeys...
Any help would mean the world to me, so if you could me, and help Macmillan Cancer Support UK along the way that would be fantastic!!
Warm regards.
