I was chatting the other day with a musclehead at the local gym who was very proud he had ridden his bicycle 50 miles to Albany, New York. He was taken aback when I mentioned I had just completed a round-the-world cycling tour, but the fact is that I did that trip by riding about 50 miles a day: for two solid years.

I give you much the same encouragement. If you can ride a bike around the block, you can ride it around the world. If you can ride a bike across your town, you can ride it across the USA or any other country.

I have alot of tips for touring on my website (shame, shame...this is not spam, though...i have a world bicycle touring website) at https:www.cyclingscholar.com where i answer alot of your questions. I'll be glad to answer them on this excellent forum, as well.

I have been somewhat of a Lazybones since i first joined bikeforums in February. The very next day I got an offer for a teaching position in China, which I ended up turning down after considerable mental anguish! So I hope to be writing here alot more soon. I just bought a new bike for a big east coast USA tour this summer so maybe I will see some of you on the road.

Rapid Roy the stock car boy! Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, cycber cyclery seems to have died. Ya know, before I left on my world tour a friend of mine said:

"Gary, you don't think you are gonna do a world bicycle tour and then just pick up and go back to work, are ya? You'll won't be the same person! You'll probably turn into a social misfit and never be able to get off your bike again."

Well, I finished my world tour almost two years ago, and I think my friend had a point. I am getting the hanker to head out and do another one, simply because so much of what goes on in a typical day for alot of people seems so, well, so trivial and irrelevant. Increasingly so since Sept 11! I probably will find a new Community College teaching position for the fall (still searching) but I tell ya, I really have the itch to just head out on another world tour. If i could find a way to raise money by working along the way i'd do it for many, many years. I have some ideas...but for now, I think i'll try and settle down at a real job.

Nice to meet someone who has done something about their wonderlust! I am beginning to do something about mine too, but in much smaller ways for right now - organized rides of 100 miles, 200 miles and 500 miles.
