Hello from Virginia

Hi all!

I live in Northern Virginia and I'm new to the forums and am about to get back into cycling. I was overweight all my life until, beginning in September '09, I finally made a lifestyle change and started exercising and counting calories and watching what I ate. I started steadily losing weight and getting in better shape, until I found out that my Mom had Stage III cancer a few months later.

I stopped counting calories and exercising, but I still watched what I ate and my weight loss actually accelerated at that time and continued even after my Mom passed away. From my Sept '09 start weight of 185+ I dropped down to around 135 by March and have maintained that weight ever since.

Starting in early February I got back into exercise, and now I'm looking for more ways to increase my cardio fitness, which is already pretty good, but I really want to take it to the next level. I had a mountain bike in the mid-90's and had a lot of fun (nothing very technical though), but now I am looking to get into road cycling.

I've already learned a lot from browsing the forums and I hope to learn a lot more in the future.

Hi adductor,

Welcome to BF! The tough part about being in Northern Virginia is finding places to ride without having to drive.

Thanks for the welcome all!

Definitely tough to find places to ride in NoVa. My neighborhood has a 1-mile loop with a steep little hill that I will be using when I can't drive anywhere. Will be trying to hit some of the routes recommended on the web & hopefully join some Potomac Pedalers Touring Club rides in the near future.

I've got a GT GTR Series 2 w/ SRAM Apex on order from Performance Bike. Wanted to buy from LBS, but the deal was pretty darned good, used a 10% coupon to take $100 off the already low price of $1,000 down to $900 ($976 w/ tax & shipping to local store), plus double Team Performance points so I'll be able to get $180 more merchandise from Performance for free. As much as I want buy from a LBS, that's just too good a deal for me, even if I end up having to pay to get the bike fitted. Instead of spending about 2 grand I'm spending closer to $1,500 to get started. I was previously looking at Giant Defy 1, Jamis Ventura Race, Felt F75. Unless someone explains to me that ordering this bike is a Very Bad Idea(tm), I'll be picking it up in about a week.
