Hello from Colorado, soon to be New Jersey.

Hi everyone. I'm moving from Colorado to New Jersey. I love it here in CO but the economy and opportunities being what they are, sometimes you just gotta make some changes. That said, I hope to get a lot of riding in, but I really have no idea where a good safe set of routes are in new jersey. I'll be living in the plainsboro area and hope to connect with a few of you in the future maybe. I like to road bike, MTB, hike, camp, etc. I was thinking it might be possible to go bikepacking somewhere in the hills too. I hope someone out there can say hi and share experiences biking in the NJ and NY/NYC area. Take care and ride safe.

Austin

Hi Austin, I've been told by a fella that camps a lot;
NJ has very good campgrounds. Check out the regional
discussions for NJ, a few folks there will tell you where
good riding can be found in your neck of the woods. Me,
I live in northern NJ and commute to my job in NYC.
From your location in central NJ, I would recommend
going over the bridge to Staten Island. From there you
can take the free ferry to Manhattan and explore the
rest of NYC. I don't know if you're used to riding in a very
dense city, biking New York City can get crazy at times

Awesome you guys! I just saw that there were replies. I need to check my settings to make sure I get these replies via email. I will look and see what there is in the regional forum. I plan in. Doing. Two day ride Friday afternoon to Sunday mid-day down towards ocean city and up as far as I can, if I can cross back to the mainland and sort of circle back to princeton. it sounds like it could be fun, and I don't even know how far that is, but I'll figure that out once I actually have someplace to live.

Looks like the pine barrons (sp?) are a good ride as well. as for the NY cycling, that does sound like a good Saturday sort of thing to do until I get more used to it. Here in CO it's pretty spread out but I grew up in west palm beach, FL and it's fairly populated there Nd have spent time walking around NYC a bit so I know how crowded and painful it can be. Cycling just adds a whole new dimension.

Take care and ride safe.

Hi Austin.
I'm in Jersey myself, south Jersey though.
In the plainsboro area, check out the Princeton Wheelmen bike club. I think they ride out of Copps cycles in downtown princeton.
Beautiful area up there, plenty of good riding.

Welcome to jersey and welcome to the forum.

Thanks D,
Thanks for the advice. As for south jersey, it seems like, geographically speaking, that the south jersey area isn't that far from the central jersey, and as a state, NJ just doesn't seem that big to me. I've been to/lived in a lot of states and compared to stuff like Texas, Utah, Nevada, California, NJ doesn't seem "huge" but certainly a lot of area. It looks like Princeton to the Penn border is like 50-ish miles, and about 65 miles to NYC by the roads and less as the crow flies. I guess the point of me saying that is what really differentiates the riding in central from southern? Just the towns and types of roads?

Here in CO we have a lot of mountains and so a lot of up and down, and only a little bit of flat. I personally like hills and the occasional flat but love to get the payoff from a good hill climb, including MTB climbing. So I guess I'm trying to understand the tradeoffs a bit too. Thanks again. I will certainly check out the wheel men!

I just realized at least part of the difference. South Jersey is pretty big, IMO. but it looks like, in 2 days, I could go from princeton to maryland and back. Could be a good ride. I'll keep folks posted if I get closer to this.

I just realized something else, I *did not* mean Maryland. Geez, I must've been tired. I gotta get my geography straight.

I used to work in Plainsboro and it took me an hour to get there via car.
That says more about the traffic than the distance, as it was only 20ish miles.
Route 1 corridor is NOT for cycling, especially at rush hour.

However, north and west of Plainsboro is beautiful, up around Skillman and the sourland mountain reserve, nice riding.
I grew up in the Pines (Pine Barrens), that is nice, too. Very flat though.
