Hello from Manila, Philippines

Hello everyone, I am Steven Yu, an automotive journalist from Manila. I was a contributing writer and Car Tech columnist for Top Gear Philippines, and am now a Managing Editor for Power Wheels, an enthusiast-centered, purely-local motoring magazine that covers the automotive, motorcycle and bicycle scenes.

Cycling was a passion in my youth, to which I am now returning with a vengeance at 41. It is THE one activity that keeps my hereditary heart conditions in control, sans medication. Looks like I'm literally going to be cycling for life :-)

Thanks in advance for making your acquaintances and for your correspondence and invaluable advice. Ride safely always, cheers!

Steven

Welcome aboard, what kind of bike(s) do you ride?

Kamusta ka?

Many thanks for the warm reception :)

@1nterceptor - Kapwa Pinoy din po kayo? Maayos naman ako dito sa Manila, maraming salamat. Sana mabuti kayo diyan sa NY :) I had several bikes throughout the years, some were sold, one was stolen :(

I had, in chronological order:
1982 Rilcycle 10-speed roadie (built bike purchased from Cartimar) SOLD
1983 Tsunoda/Dura-Ace AX full aero roadie (purchased part by part from New Cristy's along Taft Ave. then) FRAME STOLEN
1991 DiamondBack Apex LE 21 speed, rigid CrMo frame (purchased secondhand, still in use on local singletrack trails with the original Deore parts)
1998(?) Bridgestone La Cushion with rear suspension and 4-speed internal gear hub (purchased secondhand last March for city transport)
2011 Giant TCR1 20-speed roadie (purchased new last April)
Circa 1970's Tsunoda Young Star 26" English-roadster-style bike with rod brakes; single speed (purchased secondhand from Lee Pua III of BZkleta Vintage Bikes just last Saturday) - can't wait to ride this one! :)

Steve,
Great to hear your story and welcome to BF.
I have spent some time traveling in the Philippines in 2006. Two months to be exact. I spent 1 month in Davao and 1 month in Cebu. Your country holds a special place in my heart. There where so many beautiful places I visited and the people are very lovely & kind. Hopefully I can return someday. Good luck with cycling!

@TealLA - Thank you for the welcome note! I am happy to hear that the Philippines holds a special place in your heart. Contrary to what is portrayed in the news across the pond, it's not all about corrupt politics and religious wars here. We do live a quiet - albeit somewhat polluted - existence from day to day. Cebu and Davao are among the more beautiful places. You should experience Manila sometime. Let me know if you and any of your bikes will be coming over, I can show you some trails/ places of interest here. Until then, ride safely and keep the two-wheeled movement rolling! :)

@1nterceptor - Kapwa Noypi! You SHOULD get to do the Tour of the Fireflies sometime. I believe this year's number of riders exceeded 15,000 and continues to grow every year. Let me know if you're coming over, the rides are usually around March or April. One of the organizers, Karen Crisostomo, is a good friend and I can endorse you to her.

Alternatively, you can also join the "KKK Bike Lanes Now" movement which is held 2-3 times a year to encourage local government units to establish bikes lanes in their respective towns/cities. These critical-mass rides usually attract within the vicinity of 2000 to 3000 riders and covers approximately 40 kilometers across several cities.

Ingat lagi bro :)
