Alright then , my name is den , 44 married 3 kids all under 10 , I'm a carpenter by trade and a complete newbie to road biking , I've become interested in the sport through my great mate Peter who is tri-mad ( he's an officer in the Irish army ) and competes in the 40 to 45 age group . My two other sporting loves are golf ( 5 handicapper ) and Manchester united ( I was born in Manchester England to Irish parents ) we moved back here in the mid eighties ...that's me ..
I hadn't been on a bike in at least 25 yrs till 3 weeks ago , started off by doing 3 miles a night the first week , 6 miles a night the following week and I've been doing 8 all this week .... You know what ? .. I'm bloody addicted to this bike lark .......and my bum , oh my arse , the first week ... Not good ..

Welcome to the best addiction ever! It only gets worse, although the bum starts to feel much better... (padded bike shorts are the best article of clothing ever invented, IMO). Just wait until you start to want all the gadgets, then a second bike, then... Yeah, I'm addicted, too

Hey den,
Hello from Hemlock, Michigan. I can relate to the sore arse as well as the 3mi, 6mi... up to 12 mi so far. I have 3 kids as well 11, 16, 18. I love the Chicago Cubs, (baseball), Chicago Bears (american football). Grew up in Chicago, and came of age in Orlando, Florida. Now live here in Michigan. Always wanted to travel to Ireland as I am Irish. My father has traveled there and found a pub named after our last name. Turns out this is where my ancestors live. You have a beautiful country. Anyway... I have a Trek 800 bicycle that I purchased new in 1993 and have ridden it off and on for years. My recent project is a Schwinn road bike that I'm going to start to restore in the next few days.
Hope to hear about your biking travels and exploits soon.
Best wishes from across the pond.
Joe

Thanks for the welcome folks , ron h , I've only just bought myself a trek road bike , second hand , it cost me €650 , ( don't know what that is in dollars) , it's like a dream to ride thanks to a gel padded seat and some of those padded shorts . I was using my mates bike , its his training bike ..
Joe , fellow paddy , like half of America , nice that your da went back to his roots , where abouts in Ireland is he from ? , I'm in county Kildare , about 40 mins from Dublin ..
I'd love to post up some photos , if only I knew how to from this bloody iPhone ..

Still having that sore arse

Hey den,
Got your reply, took a 18 mi. ride yesterday and I'm taking the day off from riding... sore!! Sorry for the delay as my mother broke her hip last week and had to drive down to Chicago and check on her. She probably will be living with us for a while.
Hey I found out that my relatives were from Cashel Tipperary Cty (Johanna), and Killadysert Clare Cty (Martin). They would be my great, great grandparents.

My project bike is coming along fine. I am looking for someone to replicate the decals for me as I get ready to repaint the frame/forks. I'm polishing all the aluminum and steel back to its original luster. I can't wait to finish it and go riding. Probably won't finish till winter so probably next spring this baby will hit the road. I can't wait!
I also have a Trek Antelope 800 that I purchased new in Orlando, FL. about 20 yrs ago. It is in excellent shape and I ride it as much as possible. Hoping to have pictures soon. When I figure out how to down load them onto this website.
Hope to hear from ya soon.
Joe.
