Greetings from Brooklyn
Hi all!
I'm a middle-aged, grumpy, out of shape cyclist who should have registered here long ago. I'm always intending to get in shape, but probably next year.
I used to ride plenty, and traveled some too. Then I became a dad. The kid is old enough to be a bad excuse, so I'll either have to ride or think up a new one. Road riding pretty much exclusively. I've been in several clubs, was even president of one for a few years. Even tried racing one season. That ended in the hospital where I rented a TV to watch Lemond win his first TDF in '86.
My bike is older too, has aged from just another Italian bike into "oooh, I haven't seen one of THOSE!"--and that's at the bike shop. I'm wondering when stems turned black, what happened to 6-speed freewheels and 36-spoke wheels.
I'll take any motivation I can find.
Steve

I started road riding when I was 65 y/o.
First year 11,200 miles
Second year 15,923 miles
Third year 9,200 miles
It has been a blast also riding 6 tours.
Paid to ride this one:

Don't know if that is any help to you.
Ride slow, have fun, be safe.

Welcome from a past-middle aged, grumpy, somewhat out of shape cyclist. You'll get a lot of good info and support here. I know I have.

Hey Steve, Jim from Queens here.
Almost the same story. My wife bought me a MTB years ago and never used it - to busy (righttttt...) Anyway, I always thought it looked very nice hanging in the garage, kind of like a piece of art, so I figured why disturb it? Until this year, my wife said we should sell the bike! I said no of course, because I'm going to get on it any day now. And lo-and-behold, I did - and I havn't stopped! I forgot how great cycling is, the wind in the hair, the pain in the legs, the sweat in the eyes, that wonderful out-of-breath feeling! But I'm getting better everday and I'm even looking alot better. This biking thing is amazing! I have to say though, that getting out into traffic after all these years has been rather harrowing. I was plain scared when I started, but even that is getting easier, although I'm not all the way there yet. So I make use of the many cemetaries surrounding my area until I'm as good as Tylar Farrar.
Things have gotten so out-of-control with this biking thing, that I'm waiting on a "brand new" 1990 Miyata road bike to get here, probably sometime this week. Geez, down tube shifting again - at my age! Yikes! Steer clear people!
Anyway, get out there and ride. Maybe we'll run into each other on the Brookyn-Queens border someday!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! Jim--when I first started riding about 1980, I'd ride with groups from TA. We'd get out on the Island via Bushwick, thru Cypress Hills, etc. I once had a job in Glendale, friends in Ridgewood, so I know the areas. Maybe I'll find an excuse to ride out that way.

I live in Glendale and was born and raised in Ridgewood! What are the chances, eh? Yeah we will have to find a way to meet up!
