Hello from Georgia

Hey everyone. The last time I owned a bike was a few years ago. I bought a Schwinn from Wal-Mart and 2 weeks after I got it I was riding down the road peacefully and the handlebars just completely detached from the bike and down I went. I hated the bike anyway because I had bought a mountain bike and was using it to ride around town and it was hard to ride. I ended up selling the bike a little later.

I haven't owned a bike in a few years but I'd like to get a new one. No more Wal-Mart bikes though. I have no idea where to start looking for a bike or what brands are good and so on. I'm mostly going to be riding around town and use it as a way to get to the next town over which is about a 15 mile ride one way. I won't be doing much mountain biking. I'm going to be incorporating bike riding as part of my workout routine though a few times a week.

If anyone can point me in the right direction on where to start looking and what are good brands it would be greatly appreciated. I've done a little reading so far and I'm pretty sure I want to get a road bike. I don't have a ton of money so I'm trying to find something under $500 it's possible to find a quality bike for that price.

I'm a 31 year old male by the way if that makes any difference.

Start with local bike shops.
Buy one from the most friendly shop.

Welcome to BF. You may also want to check out Craigslist from your area.

Welcome, go to your local shops and ask for advice.
Tell them your needs and budget, ask to test ride
some bikes.

This is kind of a small town and we only have one bike shop and he seems to only sell one brand there. I was there a few years ago and he claims the ones he sells are great but I was looking for some more choices. I can't remember the name of the bike but I remember a lot of them were white.

Any other suggestions on reliable brands?

Where abouts in GA? Almost any brand a bike shop carries will work for you.
Trek, Felt, Cannondale, Giant, Jamis, Raleigh, Specialized, etc. are all good brands.
What brand(s) does the bike shop carry? What models are you looking at?
The locals in the Southeast Regional subforum may be able to help you find a good shop.
