Chicago bike addict could use some advice on carbon fork

Been cycling for approximately ever, but I'm pretty new to the forum game on the whole. BUT!

[EDIT: here's a proper introduction, rather than my big question-post that I originally tossed in here]

As per my profile, I'm a Pacific Northwest transplant to Chicago. A 365-day commuter, at least when my bikes aren't broken (and not counting the weekends, I guess, but I'm too lazy to compute how many days that means I don't commute). A mountain biker by blood, but as you fellow Midwest locals may have noticed there's not a great deal of that to be done here, especially for those of us living and loving the car-free life. So I've been riding cyclocross bikes for most of my time here, as I couldn't quite bring myself to go full-blown roadie after so many years in the mud. This year I've resolved to get back in the dirt on my new steed, so Chi Cross Cup it is for me.

Meanwhile, I'm an (extremely) amateur mechanic and a big fan of buying cheap and upgrading slowly. And thus: here come I to the forums, where I can hopefully bounce my gear inquiries off people with more sense. Enjoy! And I'll see (some of) you in the parks.

Note to self: read the $@#!% instructions before posting help questions in the introductions. Can I delete this and post it elsewhere?

[EDIT: hey, there's an edit button!]

Welcome to the forums!

There's a mountain bike forum, a commuter forum, a cx forum, a road forum, and a mechanics forum, so you can take your pick.
Of course, the mountain bike forum is the most fun...
