New old guy here.

Hi folks, I am 55 now and had not ridden for about 20 years. Doc told me I needed to lose weight, get some cardio, etc. and so I dusted off my old Trek 800 mountain bike and started riding about two months back. Weight is coming off and I feel a lot better. Now the problems start. I went to the local bike shop to get an odometer, and got into a long conversation with the owner. He's about my age and he showed me a Cannondale Quick 3 hybrid bike. Price is kind of high, around $800.00, but I can't stop thiking about how a new lighter bike would make riding more enjoyable for a young fellow like myself. I guess my question would be, is that a good bike for a 55 year old guy to ride, mostly on the roads and bike trails? By the way, I also have a Schwinn Super Sport sitting down in the basement. I got it when I was about 14, which would make it about a 1969 model. Tires are dry rotted, but it is complete and in pretty good shape except for the usual scratches and a little rust. I've been thinking of restoring this, but not really as a daily rider, just as a nice piece of my past to take out on a spin every now and then. So that's my story, and I hope to become a regular poster on the forum.

Howdy Dave,

Welcome to Bike Forums.

Get some new tires and tubes for the Schwinn and ride it.

I started at age 65 on a road bike.

Welcome OTG. I'm 57 and it's amazing how quick you want another bike. That 800 with proper tires and a tune up should do fine, as well, unless you've gone N+1 already.

Howdy and welcome to the forums.

The $800 is only pricey if you don't use it and hang it in your garage. If you get out and ride, $800 (or twice that) is just fine, and you'll get your money's worth. I can't say as to that specific model, though.

Yeah, I bought a Cateye wireless. I took a ride yesterday with my son, computer read 17.6 miles, so we drove it in his car. Right on the money. I'm going to poke around on this forum and try to find some info about my old Super Sport. I think it's time for a winter project, and hopefully I won't have to spend too much to get it in good shape. I've got some pictures of it on my computer, but can't seem to get them to show in a post. Anyone have a little advice for a neub?

The date code starts with "DG" which would give it a build date of April, 1971. Going to start tearing it down this week and see what needs doing.
