hello from michigan

Hi, my name is scott. i hadnt ridden a bike in 30 years. i have let my weight get out of hand, so biking i thougt was out of the question, although i thought i would enjoy it. from a top of 375 lbs i got down to about 325, and this may i bought a trek bike, big tires, upright setting and forward pedals. the guys at the bike shop said it would haul my fat hind end. it did, and i loved it. i put over 500 miles on it and broke a couple spokes on a ride. to make a long story short when i went to pick it up from repairs they said why dont i ride a gary fisher hybrid, so i did. now i own the fisher and love it too. the only problem i am having (besides changing the seat) is that i am having a bit of a challenge with leaning over and putting my weight on my hands. i think that will come in time. i am on the forum to learn. i am going to become a proficient cyclist and become more healthy at the same time. i have lost about another 15 lbs since i got the treck so i am hopefull. i will learn and enjoy from all your posts on this board so thanks for posting.

scott

Welcome to Bike Forums.
Good job on the weight loss. Keep it up.
Check out the Clydesdale/Athena forum. It can help and answer many of your questions.

Welcome aboard, see if the place that sold you the
Gary Fisher can help with your fit issues. Perhaps
they can bring the stem up and/or adjust the angle,
if it's an adjustable stem.

thanks guys, i have a great bike shop and they will help alot. BUT, the experiences of you folks that are like me provide priceless input and experience. i just got the bike so outside of changing the seat (the original was brutal) i am not doing anything until i get some miles under my belt. my trek was totally different to ride. i think i'm out of shape and using new muscles. i enjoy the comments on the Large person thread. its a unique experience to be 55 and 300 lbs on a bicycle, and some of the comments on that tread sound just like me. i will learn alot. thanks

yep, alot of people gripe about the state and the weather but i wouldnt be anyplace else. i am amazed at the amount of rail trails and other trails that are available. i think i could ride for years and not see them all. i may try. hopefully the weather will give us a few more weeks to ride. i just got a new bike, gary fisher monona, and on my second day out i did 40 miles from around greenville to alma. what a great ride, and it was with the wind (i planned it that way). i started out with a trek pure and moved up to the hybrid for more range. i will hate to put it away for winter. have a nice day...
