Fat unemployed guy on a beat up bike

Hi everyone.

Well my name is Bo and I am fat and need to lose weight. I don't mean 20 pounds overweight but way into the badly obese kind of fat.

I need to do something about it and my kid has been riding his old 18 speed Huffy so I decided I'm going to get a bike and play as well.

I found a 2006 or so Specialized Hard Rock on Craigslist for 50 dollars that was complete but needed work. I like doing mechanical work. Replaced both of the beatup shifters with Shimano EF50s that I got from a LBS for 30 dollars (used). Replaced the axle, 5 dollars.

I have a bunch of questions I will ask in the proper forums but hopefully I can ride this bike and maybe lose some weight.

And hello to everyone.

No more paying extra for XX sizes!

Go for it!

Well I went for my first ride last night. Holy crap that HURTS!! My legs still hurt today. And I only went a total of about 8 blocks total out and back.

I felt like a fool but I did it. I really REALLY need a new seat. The seat I had felt like it was a thong riding up into Homer Simpson's butt crack and disappearing. Except instead of it being a thong, it was hard bike seat riding up into my crack and disappearing.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

What a great story. I could identify with him. I am not 500 pounds but I have been close to 420 at one point. Currently I'm around 370-380 (afraid to get on the scale to see the truth). I'm not as bad as the guy in the story but I'm pretty close.

My oldest son turned 40 last year, he dropped 64 lbs in 2011, He still wants to lose a little more. He did it so he could play with his two kids. He feels and looks a lot better. best advice is to try to work out 4 to 5 times a week, and try to enjoy yourself. Good luck

Good luck and keep riding. I myself an not in bad shape could afford to loose 10-15 but the first time I started riding 3 years ago I (am now in slightly better shape) I rode one mile and hurt for three days. but after abot three rides it stopped hurting and I found myself going on longer rides each week. The same for my wife is less active than me. The moral of the story- whatever your fitness level the hardest part is getting started. Ease your way into it and build up.
