Hittin' the streets in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
How's it going everyone. Newbie to the cycling seen. I've always loved to cycle most everywhere. But for the past 10 years it's been more work no play. So time has come to hit the streets and hit 'em hard. I know alot of people will laugh when I tell you that the bike I currently have is a single speed. It is a Gray Fisher Rig 29er, can't remember the model. To me it seems fast. Thank god where I live is all flat land.
My plan is to get back into cycling and if I can step up my game, do some touring or races. I've heard there are bike events you can volunteer for where they will pay for you lodging and food. You just have to get to the event. Figure if I go to some of these events, learn the basics and upgrade my single speed to a geared bike. That would get the wheels turning, so to speak.
Along with all of this I want to start commuting to work. Only live about a mile and a half away from work. That will be good road experience also.
If any pros out there have any tips for a newbie please chime in.

Howdy, if you find out any events that will provide food and housing;
I'm interested also. There are some events in my area that if you
volunteer you don't have to pay the event fee; Five Boro Bike Tour,
Tour de Queens/Brooklyn, etc. Snacks are included in these events,
wether you're a volunteer or paid to ride. But no lodging! One place
that provides free/cheap bike instructions is a Bike Coop, is there one
in your area?

There was a bike event in the Shenandoah Valley area of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some friends went to it two years ago. They said that the event was awesome.
Cool video, I don't think I'd be brave
enough to cycle in that kind of traffic.

Way cool. Only problem is that both places are on the western side of the state. I live in the southeastern part. It is quite aways. It is roughly 6 hours away from me.
