old, fat, need exercise!(not necessrily in that order)
Hi! I am in need of advice on how to start cycling to keep in shape. My wife says I am round. I thought I was in shape......round is a shape isn't it? Anyway I need some exercise . I'm 68 yrs old, a bit stiff in the mornings (need help getting my socks on sometimes). Just bought an old Motobecane Grand Touring bike in a thrift store for $45. I figure the seat is worth that much. I hope this is a start towards a new action figure bobblehead!

Welcome to Bike Forums. I'm 67 and used to be that way but cycling has slimmed me down. I started at ~245# several years ago when I started riding. I'm down to 180# and plan on keeping it that way. I ride 30-40 miles (including 10-15 miles of short hills) every other day. Not quite as often in the winter. I ride when the weather is cooperating.
Don't jump in and try to do 50 miles the first week. It's like any other form of exercise. Start slow and increase your effort every week. That's the key. You'll see the weight drop and the muscles and endurance improve.
After you've seen a little improvement you'll be itching for a new steed. Around here it's called "N+1 disease".
When you get a chance stop by the 50+ forum and say hello to the other old timers.

Proper fit does help things be enjoyable. I am quite a bit younger but started when the doc said to loose weight or have back surgery. Good luck and the ppl here are more than helpful.

Welcome! And, as suggested, come sit on the porch in the 50+ section and yell at the kids that run onto the lawn.

As was already mentioned start of small. my first ride was 2 miles (I though I was in good shape at the time) and afterwards I felt like I was dying. My body ached all over and it took me about 3 days to recover. Three years later and small increments I am now doing 40-50 mile rides with no soreness at all. Also I made a habit of stretching during my rides. I found that if I ride a few minutes and then stop take a break and stretch, then finish my ride. Stretching not only helped with the soreness but also increased flexibility and aleviated most minor pains I had.
