Hi, I am just introducing myself. I have enjoyed bicycling for all most of life, though I have had periods (some long) of not bicycling. I am just a hobbyist and not very good at it, it's just something I enjoy doing and I do it when I can. My last new bicycle purchase was a 1994 Trek 720 and I still have it and am using it again in the last few months after about 7 years of being off it. Also, during that period I gained a lot of weight and I am a little concerned about whether or not the bike can handle my weight. I am 6'3" and 280 pounds. All parts are stock with the exception of the front rim which was damaged and it was replaced with a non-trek wheel, but I didn't notice at the time. Also, the tires and inner-tube are original, but show little wear. The Bike has about 6-10k miles on it. I had it at the shop the other day and my chain is stretched beyond useful life and the guy said it wasn't worth replacing it unless I start having problems with the gears because I would have to replace the cassette. I asked him about the front cogs and he said those are steel and don't tend to get deformed, in fact, he said it's usually only the very small cogs on the cassette that gets warped.

So does anyone who might read this have any advice about the weight carrying capacity of a 94 Trek 720? Is 280 too much to be safe?
