Newbie from Melbourne, Australia

Newbie to the forum at least - I'll be turning 38!

I have been riding for decades but took about 6 years out when we moved to Melbourne and started a family. My motivation for starting again was seeing my 6 year old learn to ride a bike without trainers, and escaping the claustrophobia of public transport.

I raced till I was 29 - MTB, Track, Road.

I still have my:

> Zullo track
> Gios evolution (Nickel Vanadium Chromium alloy frame with Campy - Record/Chorus)
> Giant ATX780

In July I purchased a Kona Dr Dew for commuting. Sadly the ATX was giving up the ghost and is in need of a serious overhaul... or just maybe i can convert it to a singlespeed.

I ride the Kona nearly every day on a 40km round trip to work with my trusty crumpler and cache of creased clothes.

I am aiming to do all maintenance on my bikes. I have just managed to sort out my Hayes 9 hydraulics (convinced that they were never correctly set up). I am now about to embark on wheel building and convert the old ATX780 to a single speed. Now to get that Truing jig and dishing stick. Might make the dishing stick out of marine ply.

I have been lurking on the maintenance forum for a few days now, so you may hear some stupid questions soon. Hopefully, they'll be stupid questions that no one has asked yet!!!

cheers

Oh dear

Welcome Martyr. Make sure you drop in to the Aussie Thread once things pick up again in the new year. There's core group of riders from Melbourne who get together every so often for a quiet ride, usually along Beach Rd.

Anyway, I checked your blog. You are a hard man rockmuncher! Nice site you keep. Started reading about your recovery. I can tell you right now that if I had 2 falls on my first ride back from extended recovery period, my wife would have throttled me. You are a very lucky man to be alive!

cheers

I can only agree that I'm lucky to be alive, and also lucky that my wife and children let me ride. I don't know about being a hard man though! You just do what you've gotta do to survive.

When I was in hospital a young guy came in with a broken rib or two. They kept him there for a couple of days. Turns out he fell off a balcony (drunk) onto the driveway below. That could've ended up a whole lot worse. But the thing that shook me up was his mum: she had given birth to him with 8 broken ribs!! Man I couldn't imagine the pain My situation paled into insignificance once I'd heard that!
