Wannabe Rider from Las Vegas

Hey guys,

I'm shawn from Vegas, and trying to lose a lot of extra weight. A few good friends of mine are big into cycling, and I used to be when I was a lot younger, so I figured I'd give it a shot again. My biggest problem has been finding an affordable bike. I'm going to try commuting (about 11 miles one way) but I've been unable to find an affordable street bike. The only thing I've found that is less than ~$400+ is the mountain bikes at Walmart that everyone says are bad quality (and are mountain bikes, not road bikes.. not sure how big of a difference this is.)

I looked through the threads and wasn't sure what the proper place to post this was, so if its the wrong place, my apologies.

shawn

Hello Shawn,

Welcome to Bike Forums.

You could buy a used bike.

How tall are you?

About 6'4", and I'm a heavy guy. I'm 292lbs now, with the short term goal (first in a long line) being 265lbs. That bike is pretty expensive. I'm not against doing a used bike, but I can't afford $325 for a bike frame. :/

I thought it was a complete bike.

If you have long legs, this may work.

My legs are sadly rather short. I guess I'm not sure what I should be looking at for a commuter bike. Is a mountain bike okay, or should I be looking for a road bike, or for 11 miles each way, does it really make much of a difference?

A mountain type bike with slick tires would work for you.

Thanks CbadRider. I'll definitely check it out, but first I need to get a bike and start riding.

So I found a 56cm bike on Craigs List, but was told that it may be too small. Will the 2cm difference from a 58cm frame make that huge of a difference?

I rode it around last night after replacing the tube and I love it!

The brakes take some getting used to since they're disc brakes and seem to stop on a dime, and it definitely needs a tune up, but I'm digging it.
