Totally New

Hello all,

I recently moved to Philadelphia from Los Angeles and am hoping to get a super cheap project bike to build and eventually serve as a weekend commuter (I can only stand being stuck in traffic for five days a week!). The biking world is totally foreign to me, so does anyone have any advice on what I should look for in buying a frame? I've browsed the forum and found lots of useful advice so far, and am looking forward to finding and learning more as time wears on. This seems like a great online community and resource, so thank you for having me!

Josh

Hey Josh,

Welcome to Bike Forums.

Not sure that I understand your question.

A good way to start is buy used from Craiglist and go from there.

I started with a $15 23 y/o bike.

Thanks for the welcome. My question, I guess, would be does it matter which used bike I buy to try to slowly build with better wheels, gears, etc.? I'm hoping to turn this into something of a project for me to work on throughout the fall, and don't know if there's one frame/bike is best to use or even if parts are universal and can be put on any frame. Again, I'm a total newbie with this, so my question could be totally off the mark... I'll certainly be browsing the forum for info this evening after work.

Thanks again!

You need to decide what type of bike and riding you are interesting doing.
Racing, commuting, touring, off road trail riding, hills?
