Greetings from Iowa

Hey Everyone,

My name is Jason and I have developed a cycling problem...at least that's what my friends call it! If you listen to them I am completely nuts! Why would anybody want to sit on a seat (if that's what you want to call) that resembles a splitting maul for miles on end. I guess I'm that certifiable nut job that every group of friends has.

My story started on January 1, 2012 when a bunch of people bet me that they could lose more weight than me...who was to not try to take their money! Our biggest loser contest was to run from January 1 - May 1. I started weighing, at my highest 270 lbs, with a goal of getting down to 220. Who would have thought losing weight could be addictive, but it sure was for me. I was a die hard "exercise is for chumps" kind of guy. I was so against working out it was actually the butt of most of my jokes. I ended up pounding out 6-10 miles a day on my wife's treadmill for the last three months of the contest effectively ruining it. I did win the contest though by dropping about 90 lbs and taking everyone's money!

As it goes, with most people that aren't in any kind of shape that jump into working out like that I suffered knee injuries to both knees that made running pretty painful. It was then I decided to knock the dust off my old Wal-Mart Mongoose mountain bike and started pounding out miles on that. Once I got comfortable on that, I put about 200 miles on through June, I decided maybe I could do a triathlon. I wanted to actually be somewhat competitive though, so I borrowed a bike from a local bike nut that had a spare bike laying around. He let me borrow his old Trek 5000 carbon fiber bike...I thought I had died and gone to heaven after hopping off my mountain bike and onto that! Long story short, that bike got me hooked and the guy I borrowed the bike from helped me build my own bike this past July.

I ended up buying a Trek Madone 3.1 carbon frame and SRAM rival component set off of Craigslist and the rest of the build items (handlebars, stem, seat, post, and wheels) local from a couple people I knew. Since the middle of July I've clocked about 550 miles and even got a century ride in. I wish I would have discovered cycling sooner! What and amazing way to stay in shape and see the country side.

Hopefully I can get the pics loaded of my bike and the repair stand I made. I'm a DIY kind of guy, so I had to build the stand so I could perform repairs and tune the bike. It seems like there is always something that needs to be cleaned or adjusted...or at least that's my excuse for why I disappear out to the shop at night.

Note: I have since upgraded the pedals to clipless pedals shown in the pics on the stand. Those platforms were a dream...to replace!
