Hello from GreatUsedBikes.com
We sell bikes online in New York City. Nothing high end--3 speeds, 5 speeds, roadbikes and various old-school cruisers. All bicycles are reconditioned, delivered direct, and guaranteed. Our customers are typically people who recognize the transient nature of the bicycle in NYC (they regularly crushed, clipped, or stolen) and tend not to be too heartbroken when their bike gets backed-over by a Department of Sanitation truck. Our bicycles are affordable and in tip-top shape, yet if they are destroyed in a year or two, they can be simply replaced for about the same price of a month of riding the subway.
We recognize that Bike Forums is mostly high end bike users, but we have found it to be a valuable resource in the past for information on hard to find parts and a wealth of knowledge about repairs. Thank you for a great bicycle site! Thank you for welcoming us to Bike Forums!
Best regards,
John and Cathy McFarlane

Your comments about bicycling in New York is most interesting for a used to be rural area, non-commuting, touring cyclist, bike is recreation kinda guy. It's flat in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area with no geographical boundaries to contain growth so motor vehicles are king of the roads. I will ride a bike for local trips to stores or post office tho'. There was a CSI New York episode a week or so ago concerning a bicycle messenger's death and the background information about the job is mind blowing; it's more like an Xtreme Sport than a job. I have been to Europe and I was impressed how bicycles are considered part of the urban scene as it must be in New York too. Any insight on where a curious, not too sophisticated flat lander can learn or see more about cycling adventures in The Big Apple?

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your comments. I too am from the cornfields--of Indiana, some time ago.
I have no messengers as customers so I can offer no perspective. They tend to have quite high-end bikes and we rarely have what would interest a serious bike messenger.
Our typical customer may not know that much about bikes, maybe not even think about their bike for days. But when they want to go for a ride, they (hopefully) find thier bike chained where they left it and if we have done our job, its ready to go. If not, they let me know.
If you haven't looked here yet, check out the New York Bike Messenger Association: www.nybma.com. Great site with great links.
