Hello from Edmonton Alberta.

Hi everyone, I think it's time for me to introduce myself. I began my transition to car-lite 4 years ago when oil was making it's run to $150 a barrel. And my car was becoming expensive to maintain. So I used public transit.

In 2010, I challenged myself to find a way to cover 17km(10mi) one way to work on a bicycle in less than one hour. One hour because that is how long it had taken my by bus. To my surprise the kilometers melted away and the commute was less than and hour. Two weeks after my little experiment I bought a 2010 Kona Jake the Snake to replace the Schwinn Mesa I was using to commute to work. It would be the last complete bike I would buy brand new.

Within a month of having started bicycle commuting I discovered that Edmonton has a very cool volunteer run bike co-op and it is there where I learned to maintain my bicycle. I became a regular at the shop over the next few months and then began to volunteer regularly once I felt confident in my newly acquired skill set.

Over time I have built several more bikes for my own use, and for members of my family.

I joined the site in the spring and was not until the last two weeks that I actually began to participate in the discussions. I hope its not too late to introduce myself and I look forward to getting to know other members on Bike Forums.

Thank you,

Cheers, thanks for the introduction and welcome to Bike Forums!

I remember sitting in a bus one sunny morning, last millenium. Traffic was bad again and I knew it would take an hour or so for me to get to work. I was looking out of the window and saw a bike commuter passing us. That's when it hit me: I could be that guy. I bought a bike, lock and cheap panniers and gave it a shot. Haven't looked back since.

To err is human. To moo is bovine.

Who is this General Failure anyway, and why is he reading my drive?

Good report about the transition to bike commuting and saving fuel and taking care of your health.

Welcome from Las Vegas. I kinda of keep track of the gallons I save when bike commuting. When I get to what I figure is a barrel I'm buying a jersey to celebrate the event. Only errands I used to do in the car count.
I think its disgusting and terrible how people treat Lance Armstrong, especially after winning 7 Tour de France Titles while on drugs!

I can't even find my bike when I'm on drugs. -Willie N.

David really is one of the good ones... it is rare that I have met anyone with such a natural aptitude for building bicycles and as a volunteer he is awesome.
