Deep in the Heart of Texas

Hello from Austin, TX.
I am 50 years old. I am getting back into biking via a Gary Fisher Tassajara my wife just gave me. I had previously been riding a 91 GT 24" SS Cruiser that I bought back in 1991. I haven't been riding in the last few years.
Recently I dusted the GT off and headed for some trails. It does well on the hike & bike trails, but when the going gets rougher, it become a little too rough on me. I wanted to do more XC riding, so along came the Tassajara.
This style of riding is new to me, so I am seeking any tips/help I can get. The MTB is the first multi-geared bike I have owned. I am riding three or four times a week on the various trails we have in this area. I ride mostly by myself, so I am having to teach myself by trial and error. I tend to lean on the side of caution, but I do like to expand my boundaries.
I've been reading this forum for a while now and have found it to be a great place to gather information and opinions.
Thanks for the opportunity to spend even more time on the internet. :-)

Thanks!
It has been raining off and on since I got the new bike. Every time I have been to the trailhead the trail has been closed. I rode it years ago on the cruiser... a bumpy ride as I recall.
I have been riding Mary Searight Park, as it is minutes from the house. I make the Town Lake circle a couple times a week. Walnut Creek is on the list as soon as it dries up a little.
Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

I personally haven't ridden there but have quite a few friends that rave about Emma Long Park. Also when you get the chance, get out to Flat Creek Ranch. It's borders with Pedernales Falls State Park out west of Dripping Springs. Unfortunately it's only open to the general public several times a year as it's privately owned. Most of the bike shops would know when it's open, as well as the Austin Ridge Riders. A word of cautin about Flat Creek, it is a very technical course but is an absolute blast!

Will give Flat Creek a try after I hone my skills. I heard Pedernales Falls State Park had some good riding... fairly easy to manage and not too difficult , but with great views. My wife and I may go there soon. It is one of the coolest state parks in the area. The river drops through some fantastic rapids and water chutes.
Emma Long is supposed to be very technical and you share it with motorcycles. Not sure I am ready for that.
There is another private area outside Bastrop area called Rocky Ranch that sounds like it might have promise.
Sun and blue sky today. Got a great ride in this afternoon. Gonna take my bike to work tomorrow and do a run around Town Lake in the evening. More clear skies predicted.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about Rocky Hill Ranch at Smithville. It's a very good trail system plus the bar & grill post ride is great also. While it has some tricky places it's still very rideable. Even further east is Bluff Creek Ranch at Warda. Another great place to ride. Almost forgot to mention, Rocky Hill absolutely sucks when muddy. Just keep riding & the skills will improve. Have fun.
