Looking to save time and money
My name is Jack and I live in Minnesota. I have decided to bike to (mostly) and from (occasionally) work, which is 10 miles each way. I currently take the bus, which is two hours in the morning and 3+ hours at night...I get to mill about in downtown Minneapolis every day. So, I bought a reasonably priced used Trek 750 Multi-Track and plan on starting this week. The way there is entirely paved--with designated bike paths for %60 of the trip. I am not currently in good physical condition--I'm not decrepit but I could stand to lose about 30 lbs...I see that in my future. I have enjoyed reading the posts discussing cooling down after the commute; I sweat on cool days. I am a bit pensive when I consider how sweaty I'll be when I get there. Fortunately, I don't work too early, so I can leave early and stop to cool off at a near-by coffee shop. Anyway, I look forward to reading up on my new "hobby." BTW, I am not biking for exercise but purely to save bus fare and time.

Hello Jack, welcome to BF, if you haven't already been reading in the Commuting Forum it is the best forum for you to gain information for your riding to work and back. My only advice is to keep the bike maintenance up to date, chain, cables, tyres and bearings will need your attention from time to time. If you have any questions in that area please check in to the Mechanics Forum, those members are very knowledgeable and helpful. Best of luck on your commutes, please ride safe.

You’ve made an excellent choice abandoning the slow-as-hell-people’s limo.
You’ll find yourself in excellent company on this thread: I decided I hate riding the bus

I'd just second what has already been said about keeping your bike well looked after. Depending on the state of the roads and your weather also look into puncture resistant tyres. They will make it slightly harder work to get up to speed but can save you a lot of time in fixing punctures - chances are the last thing you want to be dealing with is running slightly late for work only to get a flat and have to fix it when it's dark and cold (and probably raining, fate seems to work that way).
