From Wal-mart to FUJI!
Hello there!
I have been pestering many people in the bike mechanics forum. They have listened to me as I whined and cried on what owning a junk bike from Wal-Mart's was like. They gave me good advice!
I started looking for a vintage road bike to use as a starter. The people who wrote to me here made it clear that the same money could be used on used bike that was in better shape that the Wally World version.
In the end, it is the challenge of how far I can make the red line on my cell phones gps app go that makes me want to push further and further. This is why I decided on a road bike. Plus, I like to drive fast anyways.
I found the world's most beautiful road bike. I text the owner. I let him know how much I wanted his bike but how I would need to sell a few things first. I told him that if he found another buyer first to go ahead and sell. He ended up saying that he would call me to get my name. When we spoke I was able to tell him about the head on collision in my truck two years ago this summer. Up until last fall I had days where the pinched nerve in my back was still so annoying that some days I couldn't move my right arm. I let him know that I loved my truck so much that I had it rebuilt after the driver pulled out in front of me. I told him how I have been exercising, but nothing feels as right as a bike to me.
A few hours later I was with my youth at a community college where I run my youth mentoring program. I received a text. This ma had wrote me and stated that he would take a hundred dollars off the asking price if I could come up with the cash within in one week. He stated that he still believed there were good people out there and he wanted to help me. He said he knew I would appreciate his bike more than anyone else.
It was a good thing he wasn't with me in person when he said this. I would have tackled him with a hug. Fortunately, my over-exited texts back to him didn't scare him away! I added him as a friend on Facebook.
He witnessed the mania then. He got to read about my dreams I had dealing with a bike I didn't even own yet! Just about everything I posted dealt with bikes! Songs about bikes. Everything.
And then... My stuff sold via craigslist! I returned the Mongoose mountain bike and drove 3 hours away to BUY A FREAKING FUJI!
I OWN A FREAKING FUJI!
The drive down was horrible. I was driving my truck down a highway that had barely any stops. My intentions were to speed. I have been wanting a good bike for many months by this point! I told my sister to shut up and just pretend we were on the interstate. I was going after MY BIKE!
And then... I got behind a gigantic fleet of Harley riders. They were going... THE SPEED LIMIT?!?! Say what?! I couldn't pass. I like motorcycles. I like them a lot. I admire the riders. But apparently I don't when I'm on my way to buy A FREAKING FUJI! There were farm tractors everywhere. Community events in some of the towns.
I bit my nails off. I cursed a few times.
Finally I got to a road where I could let the cherry bombs on my truck get a little bit louder.
Eventually I made it to my bike!
I nearly pee'd my pants... Looking at it in real life. But I didn't. I'm so proud of my bladder!
I didn't see any obvious cracks or other signs of damage. He had even bough me new handle bar wraps. He gave me a free spare tube. He explained how I would need a different type of air pump. He put the bike on a stand and showed me the gears. I watched all of them change.
They looked beautiful. They sounded beautiful. Not anything like a clunky Walmart chain...
He lived along a highway. Semis and cars were everywhere. I was too afraid to ride it! I've never rode on a highway before! I knew I would need time to get used to the bike before I tried riding it on anything other than a small country road.
I decided to trust him. I bought the bike! He shook my hand- the biggest smile on both of our faces.
Meanwhile my son is in my car. He sent a text to the man that read "What? No training wheels? My mom needs twaining wheels so she can wide two!" I had to apologize to the man for that. My son has my messed up sense of humor!
I got out of there and got my bike to Lake Saint Mary's in Celina, Ohio. And I rode, and rode, and rode. I LOVE THE BIKE!
The gears change quickly, fluidly, and nearly soundlessly. I noted that I had a tiny touch of toe overlap. But I knew it was okay because I had already read about it.
I couldn't get over how easy the bike took off. My son asked to ride it. I gave him a death glare.
On the way home My bike got to visit Annie Oakley's grave site with me.
I ended up driving around a curve in the road to find road construction ahead. There was a sign that said "BUMP" placed two feet before the bump! I screamed! Cussed! Yelled at the construction workers (who weren't even present). I yelled to my bike "OH MY GAWD! HOLD ON BEAUTIFUL!" The bump wasn't as bad as I thought. I checked my bike. She was okay.
Meanwhile, my sister, my two nieces, and my son were laughing at me.
I said to them:
"WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING TO?! ***DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!*** I AM A FUJI OWNER!"
They laughed even more. Brats
They kept teasing me. When we had to stop they would pretend like my bike was stolen. I fell for it every single time.
At one point my nieces were eyeing the bike for too long. I told them not to look at it. My sister asked "Why can't they look at it?!" I told her because I was afraid they might "eye dent" it!
Eventually I got my bike home. Previously I had decided to remove EVERYTHING out of my walk in closet and use it as a bike cave. I wanted to put it there since it is the safest spot in my house in case of a tornado. But upon returning home, I told my son that I thought I should put my bike up on the empty side of my king size bed so we could bond more. My son told me that this was a bit too much....
I agreed.
So I ended up putting the bike on his bed instead and made him sleep on the couch! Eventually the bike will be placed on my wall so I can see it often.
On Sunday I went out and bought a helmet. I bought an air pump... But I am going to return it as I want one with a gauge on it.
I went on a Mother's day ride with a wind child of 46 degrees and 21 miles an hour gusts. I was mad! I didn't last very long since I am still getting in shape. The wind KILLED my ears, even with a hoodie on. Horrible ear ache. I only got 30 minutes of ride time in. Oh well. It was still enough to teach me something.
With a generic bike, riding up hills was an annoying challenge. But with a Fuji, it's a fun challenge! When I see a hill a voice screams in my head "COME ON YOU IMMOBILE PIECE OF LAND! BRING IT!" I love that I can finally learn how to change gears to keep my cadence the same. Up a hill, down a hill.
I also determined that I now have to buy my son a vintage road bike as a starter so he can keep up. The Wal-Mart generic BMX bike he brought back from his dads house just can't keep up!
I know this post is way too long. I apologize. I am just so excited that I can't contain myself. Eventually I will get a really good Mountain Bike so I can trail ride as well. I am very much nature-oriented!
I just want to thank everyone here who tool the time to write me and help. It really means a lot to me.
I have decided that I will train for the May 2014 Triathlon. 36 miles on the road. 6 miles kayaking. 8 miles back packing with 20% of my body weight on my back! Training began yesterday! I love to kayak! Hate to walk/run long distances! It hurts my feet too much!
I NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN TEACH ME THINGS!
I have also decided that next tax season I am going to buy a brand new road bike. But I will always keep this bike. My first Fuji. It will always hang on a wall in my house as the first bike that moved my passion no where but forward!

GRRR! For some reason I can't get the specs page to load! I will post it tomorrow, but it is aluminum bike with a carbon fiber fork! Looks like it originally had a suggested retail price of $1349. Previous owner bought it brand new though on sale for $700.
I'm not sure if "limited edition" is a good thing or a bad thing, but so far I have nothing bad to say about this bike of mine!

P.S. I guess I am supposed to introduce myself a little. My name is Samantha. I live near Defiance, Ohio. That is the Northwest corner. I am 32. I went to college for social work. I am a nature lover. Camping? Yup, but I prefer to put a futon mattress in the bed of my truck and sleep under the stars. No tent for me. I enjoy taking photography of insects. I have no problems hovering my camera an inch above a very aggressive wolf spider who is carting her egg sack around. My favorite thing to photograph is moths though. I don't watch TV. I read. I learn. I love birds. I carry a feather on me no matter where I go. Right now it is under the battery cover to my cell phone. Why? I love both freedom and flight. It also reminds me that I have the freedom to choose how I react and respond to any situation in my life. I am a goofball. I am artistic. You will eventually be able to witness my wacky art. I love to write short stories. I have been told on many occasions that I should be an author and illustrator. I should probably listen to these people. But. What if they are crazier than me? Lastly, I am a single mom. Let me rephrase that... I am happy and proud to be a single mom! I am good at it! I have two children-my son is 12 and my daughter is 6. My children are AMAZING! I would suffer a million deaths within every second for the rest of eternity for them!

A Tri club is often a newcomer's best bet for an introduction to the sport. Camaraderie, coaching, and motivation when you join in with a group of others all with similar goals. https://www.trifind.com/Clubs/FindATr....aspx?state=oh You'll need to be more self sufficient if none of those locations are close to you.
Looks like a great bike! See if you can extend that seat bag strap so it goes over the seat rails, then snaps together under the bag. That way it won't flop around so much.

And I will check to see if I can get it a bit tighter. Thanks! I hadn't even noticed!
It came with sunlite plannier bags.
I yelled at those bags a lot yesterday.
On the back of each bag there is a bungee cord with a metal hook that dangles down dangerously close to the bikes spokes. No matter where I put them I could not find a good fit. Either they were too loose or they were too tight and would make the whole bag pop up and out of place. I eventually tied them in a knot around something so they wouldn't catch a spoke and wreck me.
I like the idea of the bags for going 6 miles into town to buy something and 6 miles back home- but they were such a pain.
And then some of the nylon straps were a bit to tight to my chain. So I cut those shorter and used a bic lighter to melt the ends so they wouldn't fray.
And now I am sad. Weather is calling for thunderstorms on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday!
I am assuming only the crazy ride in thunderstorms? If so, count me in...

The way it's supposed to work is you place the metal hook in that upside-down V. Then lift the bag stretching the bungee until you can get the upper hooks over the frame of the rack. This spring-loading is supposed to stop the bags from bouncing off when you go over a bump.
If the bungees are too long, you could try knotting them until you get the custom fit.

Hi Samantha, that is hands down the best introduction I have ever read here. Welcome to BF, apparently belatedly from your posts in the mechanics forum. Your Fuji Roubaix is a good bike for anyone to score, well done and good for the seller that worked with you on the price, he showed class. Your goal of the triathlon is admirable, best of luck on your training program. Make sure you visit the Triathlon Forum now, if you haven't already, as you begin your training, the folks there will be a great source of information and encouragement.
Visit the best LBS you can establish a relationship with, that will be a big plus in keeping your Fuji in top condition, and they can probably direct you towards a club or a group of triathlon minded people in your area. Post about the need for training partners in the Regional Forums for your area, too.

Did you try to get the hook in the crotch of the rack (where that bit angles toward the ground)?
The way it's supposed to work is you place the metal hook in that upside-down V. Then lift the bag stretching the bungee until you can get the upper hooks over the frame of the rack. This spring-loading is supposed to stop the bags from bouncing off when you go over a bump.

Kidding, of course! I will have to look for this crotch tomorrow after work.
I'm a terrible person. I know. I'm sorry. Seriously though- thank you for your help! This will assist me in not looking too moronic when I eventually meet another rider on the road! That said, I have no shame in being a newbie/rookie. Afterall, it means I have started a beautiful passion! IT ALSO MEANS I OWN A FREAKING FUJI!!!

At one point I thought I was done. A group of men asked me "are you done running?" I said "ISN'T THIS THE FINISH LINE?!" They said NO & pointed at the track. "You have to go that way." I grabbed the fence and laughed madly while stating "I JUST WANT A BIKE!!!" They laughed some more. I couldn't jog anymore. But knowing I just made a fool of myself infront of men sent me off jogging anyways. I was embarassef and wanted to get away! Once I got 1/4th way around the track I resumed speed walk. When I finished- I no longer cared. I sat down infront of everyone, threw my shoes off and rubbed my feet like crazy. I came in 5th to last. And my limp continued for days afterwards.. I will never attempt it again. I'd rather backpack with very expensive shoes in the local triathalon. And NOT push myself so hard!
PEDDLES ARE BETTER THAN FEET IN MY WORLD!
As much as I like the thought of running I know I will never be a runner!
But that didn't stop me from borrowing one of the winners first place medals. I had a friend take a pic of me wearing it.
I posted it on Facebook and wrote "I WON MY FIRST 5K!"
It was great! Tricking all those people! I eventually told them the truth. Then I deleted the picture because I looked frightening in it LOL!!!

Samantha,
It sounds like your shoes could be your problem with your running pain. Just like having a bike fitted properly you running and cycling shoes make a big difference in your enjoyment. Stick with your plans, fitness and health will come with your efforts. Regardless of your current weight level, the Clydesdale and Athena Forum is a good place to interact with cyclist that are working towards weight loss goals and maintenance. Don't let the weights stated for men and women, those are arbitrary and used for some weight handicapping races, the forum is our place for encouragement and help for weight control and other issues for the larger sized cyclist, like me (6'-1", 230lbs.) With your enthusiasm and new found cycling love you will do just fine, make sure the bike is properly fitted for you and ride safe, it will all come together for you. Best of Luck.

I will take more pics! And videos! Of our rides together...
I'm thinking of getting a helmet camera in addition to my hand held...
Also thinking of returning the black helmet I bought & replacing it with a white one. black seems to hot for the summer!
