Cycling for fitness

I used to ride a lot more than I have been in recent years. I started back up last year and decided some of my endurance issues might be related to a combination of the bike type and size. I've decided to get serious about it and yesterday acquired a new bike, a 2013 Trek 1.1. I did about 6 miles yesterday as a "get comfortable" ride, hopefully future rides will be much longer. The ride was also shortened by looming weather.

I live in Upstate, NY, my primary riding locations are the Zim Smith trail and the Mohawk-Hudson bike path, though I may start riding on roads again also.

My old bike is GT Tequesta mtn. bike from the mid-90's, so this 1.1 is quite a change.

Hello Hallux, good to have you here at BF. The Trek 1.1 is a great bike for just plain riding some miles and enjoying the feeling. Lots of us are returnees here, should have plenty of company to share your experiences with and learn from. Visit the Road Cycling and the Regional Forums, for your area, to start, all of the other forums are good too, surf around and see what fits best. I'll agree with your statement about fit, make sure your dealer fits you as part of the purchase, if they didn't already do this for you. If the bike does not fit properly it will cause you to avoid riding and lose interest eventually. I spent a few days after my dealer (LBS in BF speak) did my fitting just fine tuning things for my body shape and abilities. As I got fitter last year I adjusted things like some of the spacers on the stem being removed and seat position being made just so. The forums here can help you with your questions, best wishes on your return to cycling.

Bill

Thanks, I already did post another question elsewhere as that was my primary reason for singing up but figured I'd post an intro as well.

My LBS did do a fit. In fact, I was delayed a week buying my bike as he didn't have the right size in stock then we got hit with rain in the afternoon for a week (the shop is on my commute route so I can stop on the way home). My LBS is Adirondack Cycle in Scotia, NY, run by Bill Lewis who is a custom frame builder so I trust his fit. He had the best local price on the bike, and he included a free spare tire tube.

Sounds like you're off to a great start. I think lots of us are fitness/recreational cyclists, so we have much on common. Good luck ad be safe.

Hang on to that LBS, they sound like the kind of place to use and to be glad to support them. Have fun and enjoy the miles.
