Hey everyone! I'm Sam. I've been a recreational rider all my life, but I'm really interested in getting started in riding in charity events and maybe eventually helping to organize an event for the small non-profit animal shelter that I work for. Especially since the community I live in has a lot of avid riders and a pretty nice network of bike paths.
Currently I own one of those $100 bikes from kmart or somewhere similar. It gets me from A to B, but I'm really hoping to upgrade soon, which is what brought me to this forum. I was doing some research this site popped up in the results. It looks like an active place full of knowledgeable people, so I decided it'd be worth it to stop in and see what I could learn--which will likely be quite a lot. Despite the fact that I've loved to bike since I was a kid, I don't really know much about bicycles beyond the basics, so I'm really looking forward to stalking the forums soaking up as much information as I can.

Welcome aboard. You are in the right place. Lurk around in these forums and you'll quickly pick up a good idea of what to look for in a bike and what the difference is between models that may look similar at first glance.

Hello Sammlyn, welcome to BF. The Road Cycling and Events Forums should give you plenty to read and participate in here. Stop in at the Wisconsin Regional Forum section so you can find other riders looking to set up group rides and other activities. Best of luck on the future ride organization, the folks here are fantastic and will have a lot of information for you.
