New college roadie

Hello there, I'm Zach from the south side of Chicago. I've been trying to get into road cycling for a few years but it never really worked out financially until now. Feeling a little guilty for buying a $300 Vilano instead of supporting my LBS but my current financial situation wouldn't allow for much more. After a few rides and a new seat I finally got the drivetrain running right and wheels trued out. Starting to build a fitness base right now and looking to get into criteriums next year when I come back from school (I go to Western Illinois). Anyways, I've been lurking here a while and decided it was time to make an introduction!

1 quick question: At Western it is strictly enforced that you cannot have your bike in your room. Now I'll probably bring it up before the first freeze and keep it stored at home until the weather picks back up, but for the time it is at school it's going to be outside 24/7. Aside from doing extra cleaning and keeping everything lubed is there any other small precautions I can take to protect it from the elements? (Also, I'm assuming water getting into the hoods could severely damage the shifters and so those need to be covered?)

Welcome, and I know how you feel about financials. As for on campus, not an element thing, but use a damn good lock and lock up your back wheel, and front if it's a quick release. I went to USF in Tampa, FL, and I saw a lot of bikes be there when you went to bed, and only a frame in the morning. Or, a whole bike gone and only a lock in its place.

Hi Zach, welcome to cycling and to BF, great to have you join in here. Best of luck with your riding and your studies. I hope you can get some information from the commuter forum about bike storage and protection.

Bill
