Hi from where it's too cold to cycle!
Hi, my name is Robin, age 41, live in Finland, and I wanted to go riding but it's too freaking cold today -20 celsius. So I thought why not join these forums and go skiing (keeps you warm better than biking )later when the temperature has come up a bit.
My daughter (6) says his dad only loves his bikes. That's not entirely true - I also love riding :) I ride a Trek 6700 disc mtb, a Cannondale r500 road bike, and old touring (reynolds 531 tubes) bike with studs in the winter. Waiting for a Kona Jake 2005 cyclocross bike, planned to arrive in March, so I have more "love" coming my way soon. I hope to find a lot of interesting stuff on these forums. Also hope I can contribute with something useful. Keep riding! Robin |
i hear you, robim i'm in montreal, and even though we had a glorious springlike thaw a couple of weeks ago, it's back to -15C temps. too cold.

Try riding NEKKID in that kind of weather!
 |
Check out the Winter Cycling forum and you will find people in Saskatchewan who never think it's too cold to ride. Welcome!

Why is -20C too cold? I sometimes get to hot and sweaty at -30C and have
to dry out my shirt when I get home. I find -40 a little difficult but getting better (with the use of thiner lube and higher tire presure I might add). This morning, the temp. was only -17C and quite sunny. I was going mostly downhill, so I didn't get too warm. |

Get yourself some good quality gloves.. The ones with two fingers and a thumb are pretty good, and make sure you wear a microfleece glove underneath them. Warming your hands up by the fire before you put your gloves on really helps too.
You're very lucky, Finland is a great place to cycle! I cycled from Turku to Klipisjaarvi and back down to Oslo a couple of summers ago- felt like I was going downhill all the way.. Good luck anyway and just keep on thinking about the nice warm sauna and th freezing cold Karhu you've probably got waiting for you at home ;-) |
