what bike would be best suitable for a long distance ride?

So, I'm thinking about taking a long distance ride of probably around 500 - 600 miles or so. On daily rides and weekends I ride a tarmac road bike, but I don't think this is suitable for a longer ride that i'll span days. So, I'm thinking more about a touring\road bike with some type of luggage mounts to carry gear and stuff. Anyways, want it to be affordable but still have everything I'd need for this type of trip. I'd like it to be light as possible, obvious reasons, but maybe that's not that big of a deal as I think? Probably steel frame but don't really know? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

A lot depends on how much weight you plan to carry on this trip. If you want a full on touring bike, there are a bunch of usual suspects that people will suggest. The Surly LHT is one of those and it's a pretty good bike at a reasonable price. You can find touring bikes for less and for more but the LHT is a nice combination of good quality frame material, parts and geometry that is optimized to carry a load over distance. If you are not carry a heavy load (i.e., not camping or going ultralight) then there are a lot of choices out there. I'd probably opt for a cross bike of some type with eyelets. Another interesting choice would be the Salsa Vaya 2 or 3.
