Hello from Central WV
As with most things I pursue these days, when I start venturing into unfamiliar territory I tend to seek out more experienced folks. I am very glad to have found this forum!
About me: I am a 44-year old system administrator/IT tech who only recently got an out-of-the-blue diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. My numbers are just barely over the line, so my physician is advising diet and exercise as permanent lifestyle changes to reverse it. I have a six month prescription for medication to control it and we plan for me to be medication-free after that time if all goes well. I am down seven pounds in the first two weeks by changing my diet.
(In all seriousness, this is my payback for ten+ years of a fairly sedentary lifestyle working on personal computers, eating pretty much whatever I wanted in whatever quantity suited me with no real regard for my health. It also didn't help that I am a semi-pro musician - that lifestyle is not often conducive to staying healthy.)
While we both kayak recreationally from time to time, my wife and I decided that biking would be a good way to burn some calories and get regular exercise. She scored a Trek 2100 and shortly thereafter I picked up a Cannondale Quick 5. I discovered quickly the differences between these bikes and the Wal-Mart specials I had always ridden. I used to *despise* bicycling, but these days I am anxious to get off work and go for a ride!
We have been averaging 2 - 4 miles a day on our bikes and we plan to ratchet that number up as we go. Yeah - I know 4 miles isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but I'll get there.
I'm likely not going to be much use to anyone as far as bike questions are concerned, but if you have questions about personal computers or electric bass I'll be glad to lend a hand!
