Hi from Cambridge. Hold on, I have to pull over and replace a couple of spokes.

So I sort of borked my drive train last night, and this morning I thought "Phil, I bet there's other people out there who have also borked their bikes, and furthermore, I bet some of them are online."

Hi, my name is Phil, and, while annoyed at my bent chain ring, I removed the front derailler from my 18-gear mid-nineties Mongoose hybrid last night. Fortunately, the chain seems to have settled on the middle chain ring, and I'm a low-torque sort of fellow anyway, since my chain is stretched, and my rear sprockets are worn as hell.

Is there a sub-forum for riders who are just scraping by? Also, turns out I've lost one of the bolts that holds the chain ring on. I found something similarly sized in my junk drawer, so that's all taken care of.

Fortunately you are in a bicycle mecca, look for a bike co-op or "kitchen", they will have tons of inexpensive, slightly used MTB parts and people to help. Some local forum member can probably help pick one.

Check out the commuting, living car free, and utility forums.

I hope so. The only place I can find around here that calls itself a co-op is Broadway Bicycle School, who told me it'd be $50 to replace my stolen seat and post.

Greetings! I understand your situation. I've been working on some bikes and when I google how to do something I read "use this fancy wrench that costs 35 dollars to remove this piece that you may only remove once a year" and I go grab a vice grip and a hammer. Welcome to the forum and keep scraping!

Hey, I bought one of those - the shimano cassette tool, and then I got it home and discovered that my cassette was a the ridiculous extinct uniglide that needs two chain whips to remove. On second thought, you're probably talking about a chain whip.

Welcome. Bike Forums is an awesome place. You can ask any question you want.
I might as well say right now,
Broadway Bicycle School is good. They are about the most reasonable in Cambridge. My favorite repair shop in the area is Bicycle Exchange over at Porter Sq. See if they can do it any cheaper, or maybe try Cambridge Cycle at Central Sq. I'd stay away from Ata.

I ride with a good, healthy sense of paranoia.
