I'm doing the canal this year as well. The trial run is going to be Syracuse to Rome, camp, and back to Syracuse the next morning.

Since the route meanders a bit I'm not sure what the mileage would be. Also, spending a lot of time on the canal path I have no idea what my average speed will be. Slower than I'm used to for sure. So I guess the reasoning is, Syracuse to Rome will be far enough to get a good test of equipment, time, and mileage; but not so far I'll be worried about pulling in after dark if the ride takes longer than expected. Syracuse to Rochester would be a little longer, probably around 100 miles. Maybe that will be my second ride. Oh yeah, I live in Syracuse so that has a lot to do with my choice of starting points. From all the maps I've look at, the most difficult part of the whole canal trail is the section through Syracuse. It looks like it goes right through the middle of the city. Not exactly a place I want to be on a relaxing ride. Heading towards Rome I don't have to deal with it, another reason to head east on the first ride.
