Old Velomobilist, in N. Saskatchewan
I'm 65, and made velomobiles my vocation when I was 27. I started a 2-month tour from the '77 IHPVA championships, testing some streamlined panniers, etc. I settled in Victoria, BC, studied at the library, and wrote a BASIC program to help with my calculations. With help and encouragement from friends, we got to Expo '86 with a running chassis that achieved excellent suspension just from flexible sections in the composite frame and seat. Car Cycle Ten years later, with the bodywork, it won the Practical Vehicle prize, partly because of the child seat.
I liked the general package, but the business of having to lean out the doors on fast corners didn't work out so well, and I decided that the whole chassis should tilt. Then I got sidetracked into doing pedal boats, in hopes of bootstrapping a business. I got a lot of publicity, and many eager customers but ran into the complications of a combined business and marriage situation and had to pack it in. I even got into owning a car, from having to haul boats around. Now I do a little consulting, a little writing, and a little riding just for exercise, as my new town is walking-size, and the next store is an hour by car.
