My Introduction and advice on resuming riding after a TIA

I am Norman Ketchie. I live in a retirement community in North Charleston, S.C. I am 76, a retired forester with worn out knees and hips who turned to biking for exercise after the impact from walking caused knee and hip pain. I started out with a old man no gear bike and liked it so much I traded up to a 21 speed dirt bike. I was up to 24 to 26 miles three days per week averaging about 10 mph. Then I had a TIA this past Wednesday and spent a day in the hospital. I am starting back slowly; 5 miles Thursday: 10 miles Friday: and 15 miles Saturday. My wife is worried about me biking, but I plan to try to get back to my 20 plus mile rides. Any advice?

Welcome, Norman.
Follow your doctor's advice and take it easy.

Welcome to BF! +1 on the thought above --- Take it easy and follow doctor’s orders to the letter. A TIA isn’t something to t***** with or deal with on the basis of unqualified advice.

Hi Norman, and welcome. I have lots of advice; some of it is medical but they won't let me be a doctor because I haven't been to medical school. First, they are only practicing. They don't have it refined to much of a science, and they are guessing much of the time, mostly to avoid liability. I will just say this: we are all a finite number of days from death. If it were me, I would take an aspirin morning and evening (or half an aspiring morning and evening) and do what I feel like doing. Take it easy, do things you enjoy. Quality of life is more important than quantity, in my book.
