I got a new bike back in May and since then have done a lot more cycling than I'd done before, although I've cycled on and off for several decades...! I went to my local bike shop where we as a family have bought bikes in the past and chose a Trek WSD 7.3. I thought I loved the bike to begin with, but after weeks of painful niggles in the back, shoulders and wrist, which I've tried to put right by various tweaks, and by adding bar ends, I've finally come to the conclusion that I bought the wrong type of bike for me. I think I have one arm longer than the other which doesn't help.
So I'm now going back to my old elegant but sturdy step through steel Trek for a while until I get another - so glad I didn't sell it! Having to admit to having bought the wrong bike is embarrassing....almost.....but getting the new bike showed me that I was up to more cycling, and I have learnt so much more about bikes and cycling too. (I went through the exact same process with sewing machines!).
I've read a lot of useful information on here already. The bike I am considering (and I'll take a long time to consider...) is a Thorn Raven, or Raven Sport. I would love to hear from any ladies who have one of these.

Not having heard of these bikes before, I had to Google them. Both appear to be touring bikes whereas your Trek WSD 7.3 is a hybrid bike.
What type of riding are you looking to do?

Thanks for your reply. I am indeed looking to do more touring - not across the world but just more in my local area and maybe one day further afield in the UK. Yes I know the Trek 7.3 is a hybrid - to be honest when I bought it I was just thinking of buying something lighter to make cycling generally a bit easier for me, not faster, just easier. It has done that in some respects, but is uncomfortable on any journey longer than 5 miles or so, and on anything except the smoothest of roads. I've realized, after much research, that what I really want to do is, as I say, more on the touring side of cycling, so that's why I'm looking at the Thorns, which have some fantastic reviews. I'll be taking the process of buying another bike slowly to make sure that this time I get the right one for me. It worked with sewing machines!

Loads of nice areas to tour near you, and further afield. The Thorns are great bikes (I've managed to ride a couple).

Hi Lizzie,
I did a fair bit of riding in Oxfordshire when I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford from 1988 to 1992. I lived in Banbury at first then moved to Caversfield near RAF Bicester for the last 3 years. Rides to Oxford and Blenheim Palace were some of my favourites.
