Hello All:

My job takes me to the most remote State Parks in Texas. I stay in these remote areas for a week at a time, so in the evenings, I have a lot of time to kill. I got bitten by the biking bug about 2 months ago and bought a department store mountain bike to take with me. It didn’t take me long to realize I had made a big mistake with my choice of bikes, so I recently ordered a Trek 4900 from a shop in Midland and I am now eagerly awaiting it’s arrival. They informed me today that it will sometime next week.

I would like to preface my membership here by saying that I will soon be posting some of the most obvious questions imaginable. It has been 25 years (I’m am now 40) since I have ridden a bike, so I have missed quite a bit. I will thoroughly scour the archives before I waste time asking the same questions that have been asked before.

My only other bike was a Christmas present from my Dad when I was 6. It was a Schwinn single speed with a banana seat (I don’t know the exact model). As I grew, I changed handlebars several times and the seat once to reflect my growing interest in motorcycles. For 9 years, that Schwinn was the cornerstone for all that I was. It opened up parts of my neighborhood that were beyond walking. It was a school bus, a store runner, a ride to baseball practice, and a vehicle to imitate a Roger DeCoster cross- up over our 2 steel trashcans.

I took that Schwinn bike for granted until a couple of months ago when I hopped on that new department store mountain bike. That day, I realized how great it really is to own a bicycle. I have had several “cool” cars, trucks, and motorcycles since that Schwinn, but, honest to God, I have enjoyed that $125 bike more than I can ever remember enjoying all the rest. My wife thinks I’m nuts. I must be on the right track.

But, they’re just bikes when you get right down to it, right? Yeah, right!

In answer to your question: They're just bikes...

The answer is NO! they are not just bikes. They are a symbol of Freedom and adventure; they are purveyors Health and Well-being; they help you to feel good about yourself because you are not polluting the atmosphere...the list of WHY they are not just bikes could go on and on, but I won't.

The most important thing you need to keep in mind, when you buy the new bike, is that it FITS you.
