New from Massachusetts!
 

Hey guys!

From what I saw around here, this seems like a pretty friendly forum!

I want to get into biking (trails at state parks mostly), and I was wondering what type of bike I should get. I have been searching craigslist.com to see if I can find a good one at a reasonable price, but that would involve me knowing what brands are good and price ranges.

A little about me:

6'4"
240lbs (a little pudgy, but after I start biking it will hopefully drop off and I can get down a little bit)

I'm worried about buying a bike that it'll be too small for me, what should I look for in a bike if I just want to do some trails and stuff (nothing too extreme, I'm just a beginner!)

Greetings from another newbie, also from MASS.

I ride mountain bikes primarily and live near the N.H. border.

Based on your size step-over should not be a problem. You will just need to find one that has a long enough seat post to fit you to the pedals.

I do not subscribe to the theory that you should go and spend multi-kilodollars to buy a bike if you do not know what makes you comfortable, or handles well for you. I ride inexpensive dual suspension bikes from a large discount chain. (#1 in the Fortune 500). I smile when I see the magazines and riders castigating these bikes for their low price, etc. I believe it's about the riding, not how much you spend for the bike.

Glad to have you joining the bicycling community. If you see an old (58) guy out there on a cheap bike with a big smile on his face give him a wave and a smile, it will probably be me.
