Newb from Washington

Hi all. Been thinking about getting into cycling and finally talked myself into it. I am in the military and unfortunately I hate running so I figured I could do this for my cardio. My goal is to start training and at least complete the STP this July. Been doing some research on bikes and sizes and I think I have it narrowed down to 50-52cm. I am 5'6" with 29.5" inseam. I was looking at a few used bikes and found a 2003 k2 enemy cyclocross. Would this make a good touring bike as well? I also found this bike but can't seem to find anything online about it....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 2003 K2 enemy was a good bike for its time. It may still be a good deal depending one what condition it's in and what the asking price is. It had a good mix of upper entry-level to mid-range components and its frame was of decent quality. It was also capable of being upgraded... for instance, it had disc-brake tabs. The mix of Shimano 105 and Ultegra made for a smart drivetrain setup and the Ritchey components for stem, handlebar and especially the wheels was a good durable choice on the part of the manufacturer. At the time it was released, it had an MSRP of just under $1000 and that was a pretty good bang-for-buck. I think it'd make a fine touring bike and I think it also has rack-eyelets but not entirely sure.

Any frame with rack mounts (not to be confused with fender mounts) should be suitable for some touring... a dedicated touring bike will have mounts on the front fork as well. With proper planning, any bike can be made to work.

I no longer live in the PacNW but while I was stationed there (Bremerton-Navy) I started cycling as an adult and have been riding ever since.

Welcome! I'm 59 (days away from 60). I've ridden the STP 3 times, this will be my 4th year. Start training now and 1500 miles is about the minimum from my experience. I ride 1500-2400 miles a year.

Thanks everyone for your input. I will probably make an offer on the k2 however I did find a giant ocr1 but not sure of the year. Jseis wow that is awesome for you to be that young and still hitting the roads like that. My goals at first are to get 25-30 a week. Mainly on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I live in rainier and the yelm-tenino trail is right across the street. That is a good 20 mile ride down and back.

Hi and welcome. What I have found that you won't know till you ride em. I was riding endurance bikes when I was looking around, until I rode a racing geo bike. Fell in love with it!!! This is the time of year to get a deal on a new last model year bike. I got my cervelo w/red components for 2k because it was 2 model years old!!! Same with my C-dale lefty mtb. It was 1 model year old and half price. You may think about looking into that. That is just an example of the savings. Depends on what you want to spend. They also discount entry level bikes. BTW I am 57. Its the giezzer club! Was up to 60-80 mi on most rides.
